Winry was gone. The house just seemed... stuffy somehow, and he needed to get out. The night was warm enough for a walk that lasted a good amount of time, and Al slid down the slick bank to the sandbar, looking out over the dark rushing waters that reflected the stars. He could see the fences in the distance, sparking now and again with electrical charge.
Alphonse picked up a flat rock and hurled it into the water, where it landed with a thunksplash the crickets silenced themselves, then started up again, one by one.
He sighed, crouching down to trail his fingers in the water.
A low churring noise rustled over the water, and Al froze. There was a strange feeling in the air, a silence. The bugs had quieted.
In the moment it took Al to begin to move away from the water, an enormous creature erupted from the water, sending a torrent rushing from its scaly hide. Alphonse didn't make a sound, but before he could move back to clap, the creature had its enormous crablike pincers around his forearm, yanking him from his feet and into the air.
Al let out a wrenching scream of pain and aimed for its face, nailing it with the heel of his hiking boot. It screeched back, and closed the claw, half-crushing the bones in Al's forearm.
The scream this time was worse.
