Halle was leaning on a doorway, ash-stained, with a rosary looped around a gun in one hand and the PCD in the other. Her face had a grey look to it, she looked tired, but was typing away into the PCD, looking up every few seconds to try and see if anyone was around.

The ash on her face had tear stains running through the ash. They were long dry, though. And she would never admit that she had been crying.

Halle gasped when she saw him, walking over, not trusting that he was quite real, quickly hugging him, pulling away rather fast. He had a gun. Something was wrong.

"Mello, it's good to see you."

Out of all the things Mello expected Halle to do, a hug definitely wasn't one of them. Had this woman mourned his alleged death? Why would she do such a thing? Perhaps it had relation with his future self, which led Mello to wonder why she hadn't noticed that he didn't have half of his face burnt.

Not like he could blame her. Normal people wouldn't pay attention to details when they had a ghost in front of them, someone they took for dead, now alive as they were remembered. Mello, on the other hand, never failed to miss details like the tear trail from her cheek, the ash stain, and the familiar sight of a gun with a rosary looped around. She had mentioned something about a fire, had she been pulled right from the moment it'd happened?

"Halle, tell me everything you know about my 'death'; how and why it happened. I also want to know if you've actually seen my corpse, or if perhaps you're just assuming that I died."

Halle sighed, taking off the ruined jacket, preparing to explain.

"You was inside a burning building. A church. Kiyomi Takada, Kira's spokesperson, had just been kidnapped by you.

The firemen presumed your motorcycle was what started the fire, and your ... friend had just been killed. The redhead.

It's safe to presume Kira killed Takada. She and you were both in the church. Kira knew your name. Takada saw your face."

She trailed off, using the jacket to wipe away the ash.

"And... you had told me the day before that you said, "Then I guess I'm going to have to do it.'"

Halle offered him the rosary.

"I found this outside the church."

Mello listened to the whole explanation, processing and linking all the information Halle was sharing with him. His eyes were cold, piercing into the woman as she spoke and his mind worked non stop. There were many things he didn't understand yet, many missing pieces that made it impossible to get an accurate picture. He needed to know more ( ... )

Mello had remained silent during the whole walk back home, cold eyes staring in front of him, not actually seeing anything. His mind was elsewhere, which made him more vulnerable to surprise attacks. Luckily, the trip went off without incident, and when Mello noticed, he was in front of the building already. It was a temporary hideout anyway, so it was okay to let Halle know about it.

"It's here," he said, not turning to look at her. He just went inside the building and took the stairs to the first floor, opening a random door that led to his small apartment.

Near was sprawled out over the mattress Mello had set up in front of the fireplace. His Gundams and the white cat plushie were abandoned at his side; the white cat appeared to have a scorch mark on its tail, as though Near had accidentally nudged it into the fire. As was usual, he was playing with his black cat plush. For a playing child, his gaze was unnaturally blank, even for him.

At the sounds coming from the door, he glanced up darkly.

Halle followed Mello carefully, taking care to note the buildings and landmarks, realizing that she was here, this was where she lived, for this time and onwards. Mello was in another of his moods, speaking wasn't going to happen.

She stepped inside, looking around, watching everything, happy to see a small white blob- Near, of course, surrounded by toys, as usual. The familiar sight was a comfort. Halle's pace quicken as she walked over to Near, kneeling beside him. She had spoken to him, but seeing him felt safer to her- she had always been fond of him, she considered him family at this point, her worries were justified.

"Near?"

The sight of Near was disturbing, perhaps even sickening, and Mello couldn't help but frown, cold eyes burning. The possibilities Halle'd presented him with had opened a new wound, a new abyss between Mello and his eternal rival, filled with new issues the blond would have to overcome.

Closing the door loudly, Mello stood there, watching the scene with venom in his eyes.
