Probably not the "background" you were looking for, but the second image is cross-stitch, stitched "over 2". I'm not well-versed enough in fabrics to tell you what it was stitched on. It looks too uniform to be linen, IMO.
I'd kill to see the back of it. I'm sure it was a PITA to stitch with all the confetti stitching (what stitchers call when you have a whole lot of non-touching stitches). I can't tell if the red blurring around the stitches is due to the thread not being colorfast, or if it was the thread showing through the fabric.
