If you don't count Crown of Kings, I reckon the hardest FF book may be Crypt of the Sorcerer. It's pretty much impossible even with 12/24/12 unless you're lucky with the dice rolls and remember everything.

Oh man, Crown of Kings was ridiculous. Wasn't there this enemy where you need exactly the right item just to be able to run past them, because you can't defeat them? And then there's the time travel thing.

I heard people say how hard Crypt of the Sorcerer was, but I just got so wrapped up in the book itself that I never played it seriously :p Though I can imagine what it must be like to fight Razaak at the end, if I remember right he can instakill you by just hitting you twice in a row. Eek.

I remember Deathmoor as being really hard even without playing through seriously. They give you this cryptic puzzle at the end to get a number, I literally had to write it out as a mathematical equation to get it :p
And in Trial of Champions you have to find 9 different code combinations scattered throughout the dungeon...and even know to backtrack at a certain point, which had me stumped at the time.

I don't think I ever played Deathmoor at the time; I pretty much stopped collecting the FF books after no. 50 came out. (According to You are the Hero, the series was intended to stop at that point anyway, and only continued because no. 50 sold well.) Trial of Champions didn't feel quite so impossible, but maybe that's because I got lucky with the codes. I can't remember to be honest.
