This was a great tribute to both of your sons, but especially to their sensei. It sounds like he is wonderful working with children.

He really is. I'm lucky to know him.

I loved reading this ... my second born is learning karate too ... He is brown belt - second level ... attempting his black belt this May. Reads like your sons have a great sensei .... God Bless them both :)

Our similarities continue ... :)

Which style of karate is your son learning? I love hearing about others' experiences with different styles. Good luck to your him on his black belt attempt!

And yes, our similarities definitely do...

This was an amazing read. Your kids sure have a great mentor and great idea of channeling his energy into something constructive. I loved the life lesson part.

They really do have a fantastic mentor. I know so many friends that have taken their kids to other karate schools, and a lot of them have felt like school, or like the Sensei is trying to get as many people in the door as he/she can. With Max, it's more like family. Including the smack downs when you're being stupid. ;-)

This is awesome. My son struggles with impulse control, too. I guess all kids his age do (he's six), but I'm pretty sure he's got as-yet-undiagnosed ADHD because my husband and I both have it (I'm diagnosed, husband isn't). I really, really want to get my kid in martial arts because I think it would be a good way for him to learn some aspects of self-control. This post was inspiring to me and I'm so happy to read about how far you've all come. :)

Some of it is definitely age. Six year olds are better than three year olds when it comes to impulse control, but they still have a LONG way to go! :-) I do hope you find a good martial arts school for your son, and I'm grateful that my post was inspiring to you. I know that the same things don't work for everyone, but the discipline that comes with martial arts has been such a blessing for me that I can't help but shout out how wonderful it's been from all the rooftops I can find! Good luck!

Your Sensei sounds like a wonderful person and great to work with kids. I'm so glad he's been able to help on a life level, there are some lessons that are very difficult for people to learn, but your boys sound like they're doing ok!
