His small hand slips into mine as he readies himself to jump from the van door to the pavement below.  Almost as soon as his feet touch earth, his hand is gone so he can run to the grass area in front of our van.  So much energy, I think with a smile, I closing and locking the door behind him

This smacks of some things I did as a kid - though my brother and I used to jump over the lines in the square tiles at the mall because it was lava! ^.^

Also, I feel this way about my 7 year old a lot... she's going to be too old to hold mom's hand before too long ._.

Oh, Pete will jump over ANY crack he can find and pretend it's something else - lava, a river, a line of Parana Plants....

And I know what you mean about them getting too old too quickly. My 8 year old occasionally will say, "Mom, I'm old enough to walk without holding your hand now." And I miss it.
