I have just completed a 4,000 word essay type thing on the subject of Risk Assessment & Risk Management. It was very boring and it took me four hours. That's 1,000 words an hour and just over 16 words per minute. My eyes, brain and fingers are all very tired now. I'm going to grant myself a half hour break now and sit in the sun in the garden for ( Read more... )

I hate doing risk assessments! I always end up concluding "If we go there....we'll all die horribly as soon as we arrive!!!"

These risk assessments are more about "is it safe to keep this guy in the community, or is he likely to go and kill someone? Would if be safer to put him in prison?" Of course, being a trainee, I don't get to assess any really high risk cases. Mine are all like, "if this guy gets drunk, how likely is he to get into another fight?". I hate doing them too, but mostly because if I get it wrong it could potentially be disastrous.

I would find that fascinating!

I had to do one for a violent parent once.
There were just so many variables to consider before I decided he was a risk! In the end, it boiled down to how many beers he was physically able to consume in a day, his size, how much he hated authority figures and his volatility....all of which were HUGE!
All collated from evidence of his past behaviours of course! :o)

It's part of my coursework for this year. It's called a Foundation Practice Portfolio. It's kind of like a "mini" NVQ. It's supposed to prepare us for how to do a Level 4 NVQ next year. So basically, the essay was one part of all the pieces of evidence I've got to submit on Tuesday to show that I understand about all sorts of things to do with working as a Probation Officer, risk assessment being one of them. I've got a whole ring binder full of stuff I've got to hand in. All I've got left to do now is write the overviews that link all the pieces of evidence together. This is the most important piece of work for the whole year - 50% of the credits - so I'm putting a lot of effort into it. Hence why I'm still here working at half past eleven on a Saturday night when every sensible human being is out having fun!!!

That's one of the jobs I was looking at the other day, but I never got round to applying.

...And I spent my Saturday night in having fun :P

Good luck with this essay.
