Dissertation on Nine Inch Nails

Being of the generation I am, I grew up on Nine Inch Nails. They're the band that has stuck with me since middle school. I would not have called them my favorite, because my "favorite" changes per my moods, but they have been the most consistent in my listening rotation. I refuse to think of NIN as industrial. I class it as alternative because it's not as heavy as, say, KMFDM or Ministry.

Speaking of Ministry, I remember long ago when Al Jorgenson was hosting 120 Minutes on MTV & he was going off on a shitload of rants & he spat out, "..And just what the fuck [Obviously bleeped on a delay] is 'industrial music' supposed to BE, anyway? It's not like I call up Trent reznor & say 'Hey, man, c'mon over & we'll SPOT WELD'...!"

Bwuwhahahah that's awesome, I miss 120 minutes, Matt Pinfield knew everything about music ever. I think Industrial in the strictest since of the term would be making music out of sounds you would hear in industry (steel on steel action baby)... I think NIN bridges the gap between industrial and alternative (REM (gag) is classified as alternative after all). It's not sooooo industrial as KMFDM (which i love) but it's a mixture of the two. Trent Reznor uses ALOT of traditional melody (piano, strings, guitar). I've always liked that contrast to the abrasive sounds as well as his percussion. GREAT use of percussion. NIN is a bit more mainstream. KMFDM is for the enthusiast.

i LOVE nin. nin, the cure and bauhaus are the main bands from my teenage yrs that i still really listen to all the time. although i'd probably say the cure is still my favorite band, nin is a close second. lost highway and the crow are 2 of my favorite soundtracks too (3rd is natural born killers).

hahaha NIN happens to be on all of those... I'm a fan of the Cure too. Alternately bubbly happy and dark depressed.
