Unfortunately it's just a very powerful linguistic remnant of a sexist society--that's not to say there isn't a male bias still--but when it comes to language these things take a long time to die out. We still say in some cases that we are the "race of man."
I don't believe that women are second classes citizens anymore, at least here. On paper we have the same rights, but like any group that's had at one point to struggle fore representation and equality, it's up to us to see that these things are consistently enforced.
