Best Beloved and I pretty much did this - I got a Kindle 1, way back in the mists of time, and she loved it and got a Kindle 2 when they came out - and we kept both of ours attached to my email address, which works awesomely well if you share taste in books. Otherwise you have to trade Kindles back and forth, which is less fun. (And in our case, since one of the Kindles is on permanent nursing duty and contains mostly fan fiction - I only use the wireless on state occasions - would not work.)
I think we're probably going to have to trade Kindles back and forth anyway, since newspaper subscriptions can't be shared between Kindles (annoying, that). I don't mind paying for the NY Times, but I think I'd rather not pay for two of them.
As far as fan fiction goes, I read quite a bit on my Kindle, but without downloading it. I use Delicious.com to tag stories as "toread" from my computer, and then read them on the Kindle's web browser. As long as I keep the browser to basic mode most stuff shows up fine--some layouts are really bad if the advanced mode gets turned on.
The best advertising for a Kindle or a 'bent bike is someone using one. Though the questions and comments about the bike are getting less common, I think as the bikes become more common.
