Falling in love with Ohno was something that was very natural to Aiba.
It was as natural as breathing, as natural as mother’s love, as natural as seeing a little puppy and thinking that it was undeniably cute, as natural as having the urge to draw on Jun’s face when the man fell asleep on the couch. It was something that was so natural; it came without making a fuss to Aiba’s heart and when Aiba saw Ohno smiling thanks to one of his lousy joke and thought that ‘Ah, I really love this man’, Aiba had nothing to question about. Him being in love with his Leader was not something that he should questioned about - it wasn’t the matter of gender, of age, or maybe the fact that they both were coworkers.
It was just something so natural that Aiba couldn’t help but accepting it fully, and he himself wasn’t intending to make a fuss out of it; he has never thought of trying to get closer to Ohno - let alone confessing. He let everything unfolded naturally and he never rushed anything. He dated someone else, and so did Ohno; there was a time when they broke up in the same time, and they laughed over it, and even though that’d be the right time to confess, Aiba let the moment pass.
Not yet.
But maybe, maybe he should’ve started worrying about it. He spent most of his time doing nothing, to the point that Aiba didn’t realized that they’ve grown up, that they were an adult now, and that he should make a decision now. He looked into Ohno and he noticed that he had finally sprouted some wrinkles here and there; he looked into Ohno, and somehow, it almost felt like someone has shook him hard and made him realized that he had wasted too much time.
“I stopped searching.” Ohno told him one day, out of the blue, like the words just popped into his head and Ohno just said it as it is.
“What were you searching for?” Aiba asked, but it was answered with a shrug.
“I don’t even know.” Ohno mumbled. “I don’t even know.”
But maybe, Aiba knew. He knew that Ohno had stopped dating from a long, long time ago. Aiba remember him being dumped by his girlfriend and asking him out for a drink; he thought that Ohno’d be so heartbroken, but the man was looking rather calm, like he had actually hoping for it, and ever since then, he knew that Ohno hasn’t dated anyone else. He thought that maybe it was because Ohno hasn’t found the right person, the one, but he knew that it wasn’t that simple either. Living this kind of life, you couldn’t help but getting so tired out that in the end, you just want someone to just be there, to comfort you.
And Aiba was so willing for that. So, so very much. But the idea of confessing was very absurd to him; he didn’t know which words to use, or if he should’ve done something to woo Ohno, and those kind of thing was just very troublesome that he ended up just staying silent and patting Ohno’s back, softly caressing it and realizing that even though Ohno was small, his back was quite broad.
Almost as if he has the whole world on his back.
The thought of confessing to him was gone from Aiba’s mind because of their workload, but it came once again when Nino tiptoed to him, whispering, “Why don’t you confess to him already?”
Aiba wasn’t really surprised; Nino should’ve known - heck, he was sure the others knew too. “I don’t know how.” He whispered sadly.
“You’re not a teenager anymore, idiot.” Nino hissed then as he smacked Aiba’s shoulder playfully, making him winced in pain. “Just - say it.”
“I don’t know what to say, or what to do.” Aiba replied as he stared devastatingly to the older man that was currently playing around with their youngest member, Jun, discussing something about Ohno’s tanned skin, it seems. “I don’t think that… I’m good enough for him.”
“Oh-chan may look small but he’s all grown up, and so do you.” Nino stated as he gave a rather strong pat on his back. “Just give it a try; what can you lose anyway?”
“He might hate me.” Aiba cringed at such thoughts, and Nino shook his head.
“We’re talking about Oh-chan, not me.” With a chuckle - perhaps because he was amused with his own joke - Nino walked away, leaving Aiba with the thought that he really should do something.
And luckily, everyone was leaving early today, leaving Aiba alone with Ohno. He watched how Ohno gathered up his belongings slowly, as if his thought was somewhere else, before then he finally looked up to see Aiba. “Ah.” He said, as if he just realized that Aiba was there all along. “You’re here.”
“Yup.” Aiba replied nonchalantly as he slung his bag across his shoulder. “Say, Oh-chan, do you have any plan tonight?”
“Nah, I just want to go home.” Ohno said; they both walked out together from the green room then, their steps fell into a rhythm and their shoulders bumping into each other. “Why?”
“How about a dinner together?” Aiba offered, but seeing the frown that was forming on Ohno’s face, he quickly said, “Or we can order a takeout, if you want?”
This time, a smile was formed on Ohno’s face, and he nodded. “Sounds nice.”
Aiba nodded back, and then they fell into a silence as they walked out of their agency together; it was winter, and Christmas was also approaching, means that his own birthday was approaching too. Aiba enjoyed this a lot - he loved the sparkling decorations on displays, the smiles on people’s face, the prettily wrapped up gifts -
“Your birthday is approaching.” Ohno suddenly said; Aiba turned to look at him, but the man himself was staring at the big Christmas tree that was shining on the street. “Do you want something special this year?”
In any other day, Aiba would’ve said that he wanted the latest, stylish sneakers, but he decided that he could asked it from Jun instead, so he quickly settled for something else. “Leader.” He answered without a doubt.
Ohno finally looked up at him, eyes big and trusting and smile so soft Aiba felt like melting. “Hmm?”
“I want…leader.” Aiba mumbled then, feeling at lost with Ohno staring at him like that. He waited with thumping heart for Ohno’s reaction, but surprisingly, the answer was, “Sure.”
“R-really?” Aiba asked excitedly. “You really-“
“Yeah, I don’t see why not.” Ohno shrugged off. “I mean, well, if you want to be the Leader for your birthday, then-“
Aiba stared at Ohno in disbelief that he nearly stopped his steps; Ohno didn’t seems to realize it though, and he kept on talking about how Aiba could even continue on being a Leader for a few months, just to see how Arashi would function that way, not that Aiba was really listening.
Someone is actually more ‘tennen’ than me.
Taking a deep breath, Aiba decided to try once more, and he, once again, fell into the same rhythm of steps with Ohno. “That’s not what I meant.”
“No?” Ohno asked, but it almost seemed like he wasn’t completely listening, and that made Aiba frustrated. “Then what is it that you want?”
Aiba was about to answer, but he stopped abruptly when he stared at Ohno; the man was looking up to the Christmas ornaments that was hung on top of them, and Aiba could almost feel the excitement that was spreading throughout Ohno’s whole being. His sparkling eyes, his toothy smile; it was all beautiful, natural, but it wasn’t directed at him.
And for once, Aiba decided that he wanted it all for him.
“I want you.” He said in one breath then. “I want you so bad.”
Aiba watched how Ohno’s smile slowly disappear as the words sunk in; Ohno turned his face slowly at Aiba, waiting, almost as if he was challenging Aiba to say it once more. “I love you.” Aiba continued then, feeling much braver now, “And I decided that I’m done searching too.”
“What were you searching for?” Ohno asked instead.
The right time. The right moment. The right reason. “I don’t even know.”
Ohno laughed; his voice all cheery and joyful, and then he said, “And I can’t possibly love anyone else but you.”
Aiba smiled so wide that his cheeks hurts, and softly, he took Ohno’s bare cold hands in his. Without words, he squeezed them tight, and then he gently pulled Ohno along to start walking again. Ohno smiled, and yet he followed along, squeezing back like it was the most natural thing to do. And at that moment, when they were walking around the town together, hand in hand, Aiba realized that they both have finally stopped searching.
They’ve found what they were looking for.
