“Are you really leaving?”

The smaller boy that was sitting on the edge of his bed nodded slowly as he pulled on the stranded string of his oversized sweater; his head was ducked down, and he refused to meet Sho’s eyes. “We’ll be leaving tomorrow.” The smaller boy mumbled then.

Sho closed his eyes as disappointment welled up on his heart; but there was something greater than that.

There was fear.

“But…” He spoke up then as he sat beside the smaller boy. “Will you be okay?”

The question was asked in a whisper, because both boys knew how serious this matter was; the smaller boy - Ohno - was about to leave the town with his mother tomorrow, and Sho wouldn’t have minded it if they were a normal, loving family like you could’ve always found on the television; but they were nothing like that. Just the other day, Ohno’s father was being sentenced into prison for almost 5 years because he fight and hurt someone while he was at it, and, to be honest, Sho was glad that he was being taken away from Ohno’s life.

He was glad, because that man didn’t act like father at all; he’d beat Ohno up whenever he could, and the number of time of Sho finding Ohno curling in his room with bruises all over his body was uncountable anymore, and he hated him. He hated Ohno’s father from the bottom of his heart, and with every bruises that he left on Ohno’s white skin, it was like adding his hatred towards the man, bit by bit.

So really, he couldn’t be any more grateful when Ohno’s father was being taken away by the police - though Ohno cried when they did, either from sadness or gratefulness; Sho didn’t dare to ask. But if he was to be asked, then he’d answer that he was glad that the man was gone now - he thought Ohno’s life would be okay now.

But of course it wasn’t. Right after his father was being taken away, Ohno’s mother saw it as a chance to finally be freed from that monster, and she immediately bring her lover to Ohno, introducing him without so much guilt on her part, and she simply said that she wanted to marry him, and that Ohno should move out with them.

And Sho didn’t understand her logic, really - the reason why their family was broken from the start was because Ohno’s mother was cheating with someone else. That was mostly why Ohno’s kind father turned into a monster, and yet her mother decided to leave the house instead, only returning once in a while to check on Ohno; she broke the family, and yet she turned her face away from it.

And Ohno was nothing but a victim.

A huge part of Sho wasn’t willing to let Ohno go at all; he knew that probably it wouldn’t end well either, that maybe it’d ended up just how it was before. But a small part of him knew that he should let Ohno go. It was his family, and Sho knew that Ohno was willing to try again; he wanted to try having a proper family all over again, and who was Sho to stop him? He was nothing but Ohno’s childhood friend, friends that grew up together side by side, and even though maybe he was the one that knew and understood about Ohno the most, he still had no right to hold him back.

He knew, but it felt so hard to do so.

They fell into a silent with Sho staring at nothing and Ohno still busy with the string; he didn’t know how long they stayed like that, until Ohno spoke up. “I’ll be okay.”

“Mmhm.” His reaction was fast, almost as if he wasn’t thinking about it seriously. “I know.”

“I really am going to be fine.” Ohno insisted, but both he and Sho knew that he was just convincing himself, actually. “I’m pretty sure we’d be able to get along, somehow.” He then stared at Sho, and he smiled sadly. “I don’t want to leave Sho-chan though.”

“I don’t want you to leave either.” Sho admitted; his selfishness was surfacing a bit, and he mumbled, “Can’t you stay?”

Ohno stared at him for a long while; Sho used that time to memorize the face in front of him - the plump lips, the chubby cheeks, the sleepy and yet warm, brown eyes, the silky brown hair; he remembered them all as he saw him almost every day, but he couldn’t help but stare, because he didn’t know how long they’d be apart from each other, or if Sho was ever going to see him again.

“I can’t.”

And his answered sealed everything.

Sho knew then that he couldn’t insist or ask him to change his mind, so he just nodded. Ohno left after that because he said he should packed his remaining clothes, but even then Sho could see his unshed tears, and he knew that maybe the reason why he left was he didn’t want to cry in front of Sho.

Maybe he wanted Sho to remember him smiling, not crying.

After he left, Sho just stared at his bedroom door where Ohno has been through blankly; it felt surreal to think that Ohno would stop coming starting tomorrow, while usually everyday he’d dropped by to ask Sho to teach him something, or to just have dinner together or…anything. He had thought of Ohno as his family, as his little brother, and he truly care for him deeply.

And now that he was leaving, it was almost as if a part of him was being taken away too.

“Sho.” His mother showed up from behind the door then, and Sho looked up at her sadly. “What are you doing?”

Instead of answering, he asked her, “Can’t he stay with us?”

His mother knew, even without him having to explain, that Sho was talking about Ohno; gladly, his parents accepted Ohno like he was their son, and most of the time it was Sho’s parents that also took care of Ohno, such as taking him to hospital when he was sick or preparing dinner for him - they’ve loved him too, Sho was sure about it, and if that was the case, then wouldn’t it be fine for Ohno to stay with them?

But his mother shook her head slowly. “We can’t take him away from his family, dear.” His mother said softly. “As broken as it is, they’re still his family; he can’t run away from them.”

Sho knew that she was right, and so he nodded and he decided to sleep instead, but his room felt way too empty without Ohno now, and for the whole night, he stayed awake, trying to convince himself that it was okay, that Ohno was going to be fine with his new family.

And so the next day, Sho was able to send Ohno off with a half-fake smile; he went to his house just in time as Ohno was going to leave, and then, the younger boy smiled as he approached Sho. “You came.”

“Of course, there’s no way I won’t send you off.” Sho half-scolded him, making Ohno giggled delightfully. He then stared past Ohno to see his mother and a stranger - who he guessed was going to be Ohno’s father from now on - staring at them rather impatiently. He didn’t care though - it might be the last time for him to be with Ohno, and he wanted to cherish it, so he pulled Ohno into a hug. “Take care.” He mumbled into his hair. “Take care, Satoshi-kun. Someday, I’ll go to your town too, and we’ll meet there, okay? I promise.”

“I’ll be waiting.” Ohno whispered as he hugged back. Their hug didn’t last long, but it was more than enough for Sho; Ohno pulled away, and then he walked to their car, where his parents have been waiting. He turned to stare at Ohno and then, he smiled widely. “Bye bye.”

“Bye bye.” Sho replied. Ohno’s parents went in too and they started the car’s engine, and soon enough the car started leaving. Ohno waved; half of his body was out from the car’s window, and usually Sho’d scolded him for that - but this time, he didn’t. This time, he waved as hard as he could, saying ‘bye bye’ over and over again until the car disappeared in the distance.

The memories from that day burned into his mind; he remembered the faint scent of the shampoo that Ohno used, though it was quickly wiped away when the car was being started. He remembered the unshed tears on Ohno’s eyes, the way he waved energetically with a smile that never wore off.

He remembered Ohno’s parents face.

He remembered his step father’s face.

And years later, he wished he had never let Ohno go.

He wished he had forced him to stay.

He wished he had protected him from the start.
