Well, there are some people who seem to be more productive when in the middle of some sort of competition, friendly or otherwise -- I'm related to a few of them. I mostly object to any system where that's the only way to work.

I think I'm using "productive" in a pretty vague sense, there. Some people seem to be more content when they can compete.
