I'm kind of between "people are too sensitive" and "totally rude and offensive". She could have used some more sensitive language and not indulged in a stereotype sure. On the other hand, I'm of the opinion that we should jump all over really harmful stuff and probably just roll our eyes at stuff like this. Otherwise the "outrage" just becomes noise for people to filter out entirely. JMO.
The weirdest thing is that after everything she says she still gives it a B-. This really reinforces it for me that she isn't criticizing his CD for most of the review.
she could have disliked the album all she wanted. she could have completely slammed it, if she's deaf that's what she felt like. she has the right to her opinion (and her opinion would definitely not change how i enjoy the album) but her snarky homophobia made me want to vomit. ugh.
[ also, is it just me or is the "a father's letter to ew" link not working? *wibbles* i wanna read it but it keeps sending me to facebook for some weird reason :( ]
I went and commented under the article on the EW site that this person should really think before they speak. I was so off put by the focus on his sexuality that i nearly MISSED the fact that she basically gives him a not-so-bad review!!! Honestly. the stupidity of some people astounds me. Doesn't anyone proofread these things?
i try to avoid comment sections as a rule, but the few i did peek at basically said ROLLING STONE GIVES IT 4 STARS, YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID so HA. and they're right, rolling stone SHOULD trump EW recommendations any day of the week lol
I was going to mention Rolling Stone's rating, too, but you beat me to the draw.
I have subscribed to both Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly forever, but I always give more weight to what RS says. It's an entire magazine devoted to music, with extremely knowledgeable writers while EW merely has a section on music with writers who carry no weight with me. And Melissa's review was stupid. It should have been only about the music. If she wants to discuss Adam's makeup and sexual orientation, save it for a discussion at the office water cooler.
