Verge playtest at Dreamation

Jan 30, 2007 13:11

I attended Dreamation this past weekend. It was awesome.

Friday night of con, a bit after midnight, jeisen (Jon Eisenstein) and dscleaver (Dave Cleaver) and I are hanging out in the Carlysle Room or whatever the fuck it's called -- the place where all the RPGs happen -- and I whip out Verge Reprogrammed and start talking about some of the things I've changed, ( Read more... )

Huzzah for a good playtest!

You're bringing this to FiranCon, yes? I am ever so curious.

I had an RPG session the next night with some friends of mine, and I spent the first hour talking about the game and explaining why it was so freaking cool and about how we completely eliminated the GM without realizing it. I now need a copy of the revised rules so we can play.

I loved that we spent more time arguing about the theme based on how the network was built than the mechanics. I do apologize that it took me about an hour to understand that my character, the DI head of Megasoft, could actually act independently -- and then, of course, participate in his own mind. And how Ben carefully explained that because it was a negative feedback loop, it would never violate the laws of physics. Or something like that. It was 4 AM.

I have too many freaking projects but this one has high priority. I should have a loose set of Verge rules ready for playtest within a week or two. I just have to balance that with other responsibilities, including getting Firan's Combat 3.0 finished and gearing up for war season.

As for taking an hour to get that you could jump in, I don't think anyone really knew what the rules were. We were all sorta Calvinballing our way through the design, doing whatever made sense. You did fine, but it's sad that you didn't get to participate as much as you wanted. Maybe we can run a game at FiranCon.

That sounds like an awesome game... seems as if the system would be great, thematically, for playing a "hacker" game - a role-playing version of Uplink or that old Steve-Jackson hacker card game!

I think it could handle a "hacker" game pretty well. It's one of the use cases I keep in mind as I design.

Yeah, man. Once you have slogged through the Most Boring and Predictable Dungeon in the World with someone, you feel a sense of camaraderie. We're survivors (of our own boredom), man!

Hopefully, my craziness helped make that game a little more fun!
