Distances in Space

Doing a little research for a game idea I have, I came across this page on interstellar distances. I love this page.

It is impossible to make a physical model that shows Man, the planets, and the stars on the same scale. If we make the Earth a quarter (one inch or 2.5 cm in diameter), the Moon becomes a pea 29 inches (74 cm) away. The Sun is 9 ( Read more... )

This reminded me of the solar system walk in Gainesville, GA. It's pretty neat.

My favorite factoid in this style:

Put a dime on the ground. Using the most conservative estimates for the size of the universe, let's say that the universe is the size of the whole earth. The amount of space that we will ever, even in principle, be able to observe is about the size of that dime.

Just shows how badass the hyperdrive is. That thing lets you cross the galaxy in like two scenes.
