Yes, surprisingly enough, they are applied in US schools. Public schools in the United States are somewhat similar to very low-security prisons. You have to have a note from your parents to use aspirin or any other medication at all in school; no cutlery of any sort is allowed in schools, as it could be used as a weapon (that also includes nail files and clippers). And the beeper thing? Yeah, that's true, also. No unauthorized electronic devices are allowed on school grounds which include, but are not limited to: laptop computers, PDAs, pagers, cell phones. I was allowed to carry my laptop, but only because I was able to justify it to the principal of the school. I told him that I used it to take notes in class (which I never actually did), and to write essays to be turned-in for class (which I sometimes did). Now do you understand why Americans are so fucked-up? ;-)

Okay, there are some things one would expect to be... I don't know, normal? This was certainly one of those things. Thanks for clearing it up. Jaw stays dropped then.

It's all in the name of 'safety'. They care about the safety of our bodies more than the freedom of our minds. It's remarkable how many thoughts and ideas were censored in High School. Most of my friends are embittered souls due to the harsh treatment we all recieved in school. You have to be a specific type of person to get by in American public schools without any sort of emotional scarring resulting from your time there.
