[Rita arrived at the Ad Libitum guild house with a note she had been writing since leaving Col. Curtiss to fend for himself at the Mines. She read over her note a few times

[Rita, not being one who is skilled at multi-tasking, struggled to keep her Fire arte delayed, keeping an eye on Dist and listening to everything Jade had to say

[Some of the ice tore a not insignificant chunk out of the puppet, and another shard nicked Dist's leg. He yelped and tried to back away, but the puppet lurched in the other direction and he was dragged after it, just barely managing to keep his grip on it. He threw his other arm around its neck and clung to it, trying to force the damaged thing to move how he wanted. The other ear swung wildly in Jay's general direction, but missed by a mile.

Really, he was cool. Totally cool. He was having some minor setbacks, but this could be nothing but a success. Really.]

[Jay was not amused as he watched the scene, tapping his foot. If this was all Dist could do in battle, he was ready to end it. But it didn't look like it was going to end until that doll thing was completely dead. Hopefully some more exploding daggers should do the trick.

So Jay threw yet another exploding dagger towards the doll's legs.]

Gah! Stop that!

[And now the bottom of his puppet was on fire again. Dist tried to advance on Jay with it anyway, but the puppet, never particularly agile to begin with, was now all but immobile. It was all he could do to get it to fall over towards Jay, with him, still trying to control the thing, on its back.

Perhaps eventually Dist would notice that the hem of one of his pant legs had also caught fire.]

[Jay stepped back to avoid being crushed by the doll as it fell towards him. Oh, he was more than happy to bring the fire to Dist's attention while sporting a singsong voice.]

Oh Dist...your pants are on fire. Heh heh...

Shut up! What are you - Aaaaaaah!

[Dist leapt up and flailed his leg around desperately. The puppet, unheeded, shrank back down again into a smoldering mess.

The worst part, really, was that he couldn't even say this was the first time a day spent chasing after Jade had ended with Dist aflame.]

I'll get you for this! Argh... why...? [He turned to face the sealed door, his pants having finally gone out.] Jade, why would you favor this brat over me?! After all the years I spent with you! How could some brutish child possibly be better?!

Heh heh... [Jay giggled once again.]

I told you that Colonel Jade and I were cooperating with each other. At least we're making some progress, and we just get along so well. (^_^)

But if you don't believe me, let's just hear what the colonel has to say.

[Jade listened to the long series of events, eventually caressing his face in his hand as he listened to the tomfoolery taking place on the opposite side of the sealed door. As amusing as he deemed Dist's misery, he concluded that he would rather observe the spectacle--of course, had he been present, he would have no doubt been dragged into that situation. That would not have been preferable.]

[Oh, but Dist being the wonderful individual that he was, managed to include him anyway. How considerate. Well, now, he had the misfortune of making Dist's acquaintance years earlier. After knowing of the God-General for that long, it would be rude to deny an honest answer!]

I must thank both of you for bringing me into your quarrel. [He sighed as if the very thought had worn him out. Very well. Dist, I do believe that I would prefer the company of lice to yours. Now please harass someone else. There is at least one other God-General around--why don't you run along play with him.[Oh! He had a better idea! Although he had maintained his

[Oh, why did Jade always have to be so terribly cruel? It was almost as if he didn't like Dist. So perplexing.]

You...! [He stomped his foot - then whimpered and just barely managed to keep his knees from buckling, as the foot in question was attached to the same leg that had been cut and burned. Clenching his teeth, he went on:]

Stop trying to change the subject! I already met with that useless fool, and he only told me to talk to you - as if I could ever cooperate with the likes of you! I can't imagine why anyone would let such a despicable traitor be in charge of anything!

[He paused, panting for breath and trying not to sway. Between the battle, the pain, and all the yelling he was doing, he'd gotten rather winded.]

[Jay blinked for a moment. If Dist despised Jade so badly, why was he so eager to find him?

Nevertheless, Jay was ready to end this battle now. He needed a new strategy. Instead of targeting Dist's doll thing, it was time to target Dist himself. Jay raised his dagger once again.]

Oh, if only you could see this, Colonel. If I really wanted to set someone on fire, this is how I would do it.

[With that, he hurled the dagger, which thrust into the ground in between Dist's feet. Jay concentrated for a brief second once again.]

Pyre!!

[As the dagger shot up from the ground, a field of flames flared up beneath Dist. Jay caught the dagger in his hand, hoping that Dist had been set on fire, and that it would be enough to finally drive him away.]

Stop, drop, and roll!

[runnyrose]

[Dist stared at the dagger in the ground and gave a mad, panicked grin.]

Ha! Ahaha! You mi-

[And then the flames engulfed him.]

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

[He was on fire. Again. He really hated being set on fire. Such a pain. Recovering from burns was no picnic, and his clothes would probably be damaged beyond repair

[Dist's incoherent ranting had cut off in mid-insult. From what Jade could tell, the fellow scientist had been on fire moments earlier, but his quelling had been too sudden for Jade to conclude that the victim had perished. Besides, Dist never died. Not from explosions, not from ocean currents, not from a raging Anise, and not even from Jade's own antics

[Jay began to laugh again as Dist screamed at him while he was on fire. Then, hoping that Dist had finally decided to leave them alone, Jay's laughter died down. Just then, he became aware of the exhaustion in his body once again as he slumped over to catch his breath.

Finally, he turned to Rita to see how she was doing in her calculations to open the seal.]

Well...any progress?
