National Language?

Well, it looks like after 230 years of multicultural accomodation and bilingual states, the federal government is finally deciding to mandate language. English as the "official language". It almost makes me want to start speaking spanish ( Read more... )

I think the founding fathers had a good idea when they left official languages up to the states. Many states have been bi and tri lingual for over 200 years, and I see no reason to have an official federal language now. One of the beauties of the system the founders designed was the diversity it ensured. All states have English as one of their official languages, and some have additional ones based on what the people need. Seems like a pretty good system to me.
