Besides, Joseph and Mary wouldn't have been going to pay their taxes unless they made money for taxes to be paid upon. And Jesus was born in a stable, because there wasn't any room in any of the inns. If they didn't have money they wouldn't have been able to afford to look for a room in the first place.

I don't understand why so many people feel the need to debate religion. The heart of the teachings is what's truly important. Of course, it is important for people to try to come to their own way of understanding things, but I think we invariably just end up over complicating things.

I love debating religion. I feel that by hearing other people's point of views, I can better define what I believe in.

And you're right; he probably didn't have to be poor. The important point is that he wasn't concerned at all with the material aspect of things. He trusted God to provide his physical needs, and spent his time focused on higher things.
