We all have our vices.

On the way home Junghee cranked up the radio and sang along loudly, elated. She was still humming cheerfully when she reached her apartment door several minutes later. She jiggled her key in the lock impatiently when it stuck as she was undoing the deadbolt. After a moment, she managed to free it from the lock and swung the door open.

Her lighthearted hum died in her throat and her skin turned cold at the sight of a pair of bright red combat boots in the entranceway. Junghee cleared her throat loudly, calling,

“I’m back!”

There was no answer from inside the apartment. She walked inside cautiously to see the apparently normal sight of Minjung and Gwiboon sitting on the couch watching TV. Except that Gwiboon never watched TV. The two girls greeted her brightly as she walked into the room, tension barely detectable in their slightly higher-than-normal voices.

Junghee couldn’t resist torturing them just a little for interrupting her good mood. Playing dumb, she walked around the couch and sat down in a nearby armchair. Up close, she could see that both girls’ hair was disheveled and Gwiboon’s make up was smeared, her fifty-dollar lipstick completely ruined. Both Minjung and Gwiboon were panting slightly, and Gwiboon’s quickly obscured left hand was balled around something that looked suspiciously like a bra.

“What are you guys watching?” Junghee asked innocently, and both girls looked quickly at the TV. Junghee could tell from Minjung’s wince that the girl knew they had been caught, but waited for an answer anyway.

“We’re watching...Pororo.” Junghee hummed thoughtfully before saying,

“Pororo, huh? What’s happening?” It was almost comical to see Minjung look at the TV again, frantically trying to discern the plot of the children’s show in the two seconds before she had to respond. Gwiboon however, glowered at Junghee and snapped,

“Oh, cut the crap Junghee, and just give us the lecture already.” Junghee sighed. Leave it to Gwiboon to ruin her fun. She drew herself up, as much as she could -being much shorter than both of the other girls, and began,

“Okay, well first of all, you two met each other today. And while I’m glad that you hit it off well, maybe just- I don’t know, chill out for a few days. Or weeks. Yes, weeks is good.” Junghee saw that Gwiboon was marshaling an argument over on the couch and raised a hand. “Whatever, it’s your life, so you can do what you want, but I’ve been in the same situation -alright maybe not exactly-” Minjung interrupted her quickly, aware of Junghee’s tendency to ramble when she was anxious.

"Unnie!”

“Okay, I digress. Just...at least think about waiting. Go on a few dates first or something, you know, fun stuff. You both could use some fun. And when-slash-if you guys decide to, uh, ‘do it,’ can you please, for my sanity, not do it on the couch? Minjung, you have an enormous bed in your room, which is conveniently behind a door with a lock, so you don’t have to worry about me barging in. And Gwiboon, don’t you have a penthouse apartment all to yourself? There you go, that’s perfect bachelorette-pad material right there.” Gwiboon wrinkled her nose at the term, but didn’t protest.

“Okay now that that’s done with, let me just say; Minjung, because Gwiboon is my cousin and I’ve known her since we were babies, I can think of a thousand reasons why you’re making a huge mistake here,” Junghee ignored Gwiboon’s offended sound and continued, “but also since she’s my cousin and I’ve known her since we were babies, I’d prefer if you didn’t uh, break her heart or whatever. If she’s still got one, that is.” Minjung’s horrified look was reassurance enough for Junghee, who then turned to Gwiboon.

“And Gwiboon, I know you love playing hackey-sack with people’s emotions because you’re a sadistic bitch, but if you hurt Minjung I swear to god I’ll come after you, I don’t care that we’re family. She’s my best friend, so you better treat her right, or else.” Gwiboon had a smoldering look in her eyes as she replied, her gaze fixed on Minjung.

“Don’t worry, I intend to.” The tall girl flushed at the husky note in Gwiboon’s normally girly voice, reaching over to clasp her hand tightly.

“Ookay then, that’s my cue to leave.” Junghee stood up hurriedly, calling over her shoulder at the two girls still on the couch. “Gwiboon you better not be here in the morning, alright? I’m not making you breakfast!”

-

Junghee awoke the next morning to the tantalizing smell of frying bacon. Rubbing sleep from her eyes groggily, she trudged into the kitchen to see Minjung at the stove tending to the bacon and a large skillet full of scrambled eggs.

Junghee sat down at the table with a heavy thump just as Minjung pushed a plate laden with bacon and eggs her way.

“You are a domestic goddess, Minjung-ah.” Junghee croaked at her before asking hopefully, “Coffee?”

“Right here,” the tall girl replied sweetly, pouring the steaming liquid into a mug and handing it to her. Junghee took a grateful gulp, then looked at her friend suspiciously.

“Why are you making breakfast? And coffee? What’s going on?” Minjung smiled, spreading her hands innocently before her.

“Do I have to have an ulterior motive? I’m just making breakfast, why is that so suspicious?” Junghee’s eyes narrowed. She craned back in her chair so that she could just see the front door. Scanning the entranceway, she let out a relieved sigh when she saw no sign of Gwiboon’s loud red boots. Seeing the direction of her gaze, Minjung said, “No, she’s not still here, if that’s what you’re wondering.”

“Good. She’s not a morning person. At least now I know the reason for this so-called ‘ulterior motive-less’ breakfast.” She pointed a strip of bacon at her friend. “You’re apologizing.” Minjung rolled her eyes.

“Okay, yeah, I’m sorry you walked in on that, but honestly, Gwiboon and I were expecting you home way earlier. We were waiting for you because Gwiboon said she misses you, and we got...distracted.” Junghee scoffed.

“I’ll say. Whose bra did Gwiboon stuff behind her back when I walked in?” Minjung grinned wolfishly.

“Hers. It came off pretty fast once we-” Junghee covered her ears.

“Oh god, ew. Why did I even ask that? Don’t ever give me details, do you understand? Even if I ask, I do not want to know the mechanics of how you and Gwiboon do whatever it is that you do. Augh.” Minjung laughed, far too pleased with herself for Junghee’s liking.

“Okay, new topic. Where the hell were you last night when you were supposed to be cock-blocking me and Gwiboon?” Junghee giggled.

“How can you cock-block lesbians? Neither of you even have a-” She quickly dodged the punch Minjung threw at her and continued, “I was organizing Seungri’s office for him and I ran into Kibum.” Minjung choked on the eggs she had stolen from Junghee’s plate.

“Wait, what? Why didn’t you say anything? 'I talked to Kibum last night' should have been the first thing out of your mouth this morning! What happened?”

“Uh, well I went outside to throw something away and he was out there smoking again.” Minjung made a face and asked,

“Did he tell you why he was AWOL last week?” Junghee nodded, somber.

“His grandmother died. Apparently they were really close. He was at her funeral.” Minjung gasped quietly and asked,

“He told you that? What did you say? Oh god Junghee, knowing you, I bet you said something stupid.” Junghee stuck her tongue out at her friend.

“I only told him I liked his new hair, and then he asked me to sing for him.”

“He what?!” Minjung who was normally very composed, nearly squawked at her.

“He asked me to sing for him.” The tall girl flapped an annoyed hand at her.

“I heard that part already. What did you do? What happened?”

Junghee quickly regaled her friend with the story, explaining how she had cried and Kibum had comforted her. When she finished the story and looked up, Minjung was looking at her exasperatedly.

“You cried. Of course you did. Unnie, you’re honestly the most sentimental person I’ve ever met.” Junghee folded her arms in front of her and dropped her head onto them, weary of their conversation. Changing the subject abruptly to get Minjung off her back, she asked,

“How many days until your audition, again?” Minjung’s eyes lit up excitedly at the new topic.

“It’s on Wednesday afternoon. Only five days to go!” Her face scrunched suddenly, and she said, “I’m really nervous, Junghee-unnie. What if I don’t get the part?” Junghee immediately launched into reassurances and staunch proclamations that if the director didn’t pick her he was crazy. Minjung looked a little less worried.

“Thanks unnie.” Junghee smiled at her best friend.

“No problem, Minjung-ah.”
