The radio transmitter behind them, Gordon and Alyx continue on their way through the mountains. Whoever drove this road last did so a very long time ago, if the height of the grass is anything to go by. That's fine with Gordon. It means that there's a good possibility the Combine haven't gotten much farther than the

Sure enough, as they come over the crest of the next hill, Alyx spots a familiar silhouette on the far horizon.

"Hey, I know that peak! You can see it from White Forest!"

"We're heading the right way, then," Gordon murmurzs. "Good."

Then he glances past Alyx to his right and frowns a little. "We're not there yet, though, right?" he asks, nodding towards the chickenwire fencing that seems to've sprung up about twenty yards away, parallel to the road.

Alyx shakes her head. "This doesn't look like the territory around the base. I think we have a ways... to..."

She trails off, looking ahead to a plume of smoke that seems to originate on or near the road up ahead.

Gordon says nothing, but speeds up. If it's smoke from something the Combine've done he doesn't want to get caught in the open, and if it's smoke that humans're making on their own he wants to get there and see who it is and what's going on.

It's a heavy, black, greasy sort of smoke, though. That's not a good sign.
