I think part of the issue is that many videogame designers are male, so they default to using male main characters. That, and I'm sure many of them also still believe (erroneously, from what I understand) that most female gamers are more of the "casual gamer" type, so they cater only to male gamers. It's a vicious cycle, to be sure.

As for whether or not to take a risk on a game / book / movie / etc., I'm of the opinion that it's the writer's job to get my attention, not the other way around. That said, I usually try things out before deciding, so I'll often watch a gameplay video on YouTube before deciding on buying a new game, for instance.
