The voyage on the plane was unbearable quiet. Not that Nate minded it. It was nice to have a bit of silence for a change, he was still getting used to the coms and to have voices continuously in his ear.
Parker, Hardison and Eliot were asleep a couple of rows back. The con in Belgrade had been difficult, especially for Parker who was still emotionally unstable. No, it was okay for the younger teams to be quiet and rest, the silence that was most bothering him was from the woman sitting next to him who he knew wasn’t asleep, she was just ignoring him on purpose.
“Oh, come on Sophie” he nudged her with his elbow, but the grifter kept looking outside the airplane window into the dark. “Are you still mad about the film?” he sighed “I’m sorry okay.” Still silence. “We’re stopping in Paris, isn’t that enough? We’re going to spend the all week there and do all the things you like. You can even spend my money”
Still the silence treatment.
“Sophie” he begged putting a hand on her shoulder.
“Leaving me alone, Nate” she shook his hand away.
“What can I do to make things better?”
She sighed and turned towards him knowing that for some reason he wasn’t going to drop the subject. “Yes, it’s about the film, but it’s also not about it”
He frowned in confusion.
“It’s like you, and not just you the others too, have no respect for my acting career.”
“We go to all your plays” he replied back.
“Yes, only because you have to, not because you want to.” She snorted. “I really like acting, it’s my passion and I would really love to have your support.”
“Only a few months ago I was your number one fan.” He slightly raised his voice and someone from the row in front shushed him, it was the middle of the night after all. ”What happened since then?” he hiss the last part.
“You know what?” she waved him off. “Let’s forget about it. I’ll take you shopping with and I’ll get to spend your money. That’s fine”
“No, Soph… if there’s a problem between us, we need to solve it.” He stopped her from turning away from him.
“Why are you being so un-Nate?” she groaned.
“Un-Nate?” he smirked.
“You don’t talk about feelings. You just drink and forget about it.”
“Let’s just say that this job was difficult for me too” he looked down, hiding his eyes from her.
“Sam?” she whispered.
He slowly nodded. “So for tonight you get the old Nate, not the drunk one. So, I’ll ask you again: what’s the problem?”
She studied him for a second wondering if he was sincere. She shook her head and gave a small laugh. “I cannot believe it you’re making me do this here, on a plane full of people where anyone could listen”
“Ignore them. It’s just you and me” he knew that what she was going to tell him was going to be difficult for her, but a part of him was eagerly waiting for her story. He knew so little, if not nothing about her past and to have her finally open up.
“ Fifteen years ago I… I gave a baby away for adoption” she finally confessed. “I was young and I had just started grifting and conning people. It wasn’t supposed to happen, I was not the right person to be a mother then, so I took that decision” she looked at him hoping not to see him judging her, but she only found encouragement. “But seeing those kids made me wonder. I haven’t thought about her since…” and she stopped not wanting to continue.
“Since Sam” he whispered.
“Yeah,” she nodded, tears in her eyes. “Did I make the right decision? Did she find a good family? Or did she stay in foster care? Does she have a good life? These are all questions that have been tormenting me since we left the kids at the border. I’m regretting not keeping track of her, not wanting anything to do with the adoption.”
He put his hand on top of hers. “We could ask Hardison to look into it. It shouldn’t take him long to find the answers you’re looking for.”
“But what if I don’t like them, what if she…” she dried her tears. “What if I made a mistake all those years ago?”
“You could try to make it better.” He sighed. “I can’t tell you what to do, Sophie, but I’ll be here to accept your decision and help you anyway you need me”
She gave him a small smile. “Thanks Nate” and she laid her head on his shoulder while their hands were still linked together.
“It’s going to be alright Soph” he whispered in her hair and for a moment she believed him.
