Almost without realising it Tait reached two months of living in Alice Springs. The time had flown by without her realising it and as she carefully thought about it she didn’t seem like she would be moving any time soon. She enjoyed the work, she enjoyed her small flat, her cat was happy and she even had a few friends. What more could she ask for?
The rest of her road trip could always come later. Living in Alice for half a year or more could be fine, she was raising money there steadily and living in a town where there were few ways to really spend it was doing wonders for her savings account.
She spent her weekends with Kimi and her partner John often, Kimi was a few months pregnant now and was always worn out after a week of work, and her want to do nothing but play computer games or read a book, something tait was quite happy to join her for especially when John had to work weekends and Kimi wanted some company.
“I’d love to have my own computer.” Tait mused, she always used John’s when she visited and then mainly watched when he was home. “But there’s no way I can have one now that I’m on the road…”
“A laptop would be able to handle these games and be easy to move if you spent enough money on it.” John suggested. “If you wanted to spend the money you could even get satellite internet on it so no matter where you travel to in Australia, even in the middle of the outback you would be able to go online and check your emails.”
“He’s tempting me to spend all my hard earned monies.” Tait grumbled to Kimi who laughed. “I wouldn’t even know how to use it. A laptop would be so delicate, I’d probably break it.”
“I’ll show you how to set it up.” Kimi assured her. “It would cost a lot though, are you sure?”
“Overlord is addictive.” Tait replied, naming the game the three had been playing all week. “…And it’s a worthwhile investment.” She tried to reason, and all three of them laughed.
They had Asian for dinner… which is to say that Kimi and Tait had Asian and John had nuggets and chips from KFC which seemed to be the only takeaway he was interested in eating due to trauma as a young child. Tait felt content. Somehow she had found a place which was more like a home than the place she had lived the first 20 years of her life had ever been, and she didn’t feel like she wanted to move for a good long time yet.
“So, my own computer.” She mused aloud, clicking her chopsticks together while she thought. “Can I get one here?”
“I can get you one through my work, yes.” John confirmed.
Tait smiled. These friends were great, ready to help although he hardly knew her. What a place.
