008. Number Two - April/May - Rambles & Snippets - Fiction[NET]

It threw his schedule back a few days but soon they were on the road again. Sidney looked worse than Dillon ever had; it was as if they had given Sidney every beating Dillon had seen in his life and then another dozen they’d never be able to make Dillon suffer through. Sidney was only 19 but older than his years, Sidney’s partner Natasha was 21 however, and pregnant.
“You’re not taking me without her!” Sidney demanded. “I’m not leaving her behind!”
“You can’t stay here,” Dillon hissed. Sidney was being loud. It was four in the morning and Dillon felt like the empty streets were filled with hidden members of his (ex) family, sitting in the shadows and waiting to jump him as soon as they were given a chance. “They’ll get you! They’ll get you a lot worse than this, I’ve seen them do it!”
“Take both of us then.” Sidney challenged, as if he didn’t believe he would do it. Dillon looked past him to the quiet girl behind him and met her eyes for a long moment. He had known Natasha for most of his life - longer than he had known Sidney for even.
“Fine, yes, but we leave in an hour.” Dillon decided. It wouldn’t be a problem, Natasha and Sidney were smart and had actual jobs, and they could afford to move around with him for a few months or until they were sure they weren’t in danger anymore, then they could settle down somewhere new. Natasha was always talking about how she’d like to move away anyhow, now was the perfect reason.
“Are you sure?” she asked Dillon slowly, shaking her head wordlessly at Sidney as he tried to interrupt. “This seems like something you were going to do by yourself. If we come we’re only more people you have to worry about…”
“Look what happened because of me, because I left.” Dillon replied, gesturing to Sidney. “If you both don’t mind giving up your normal lives… your jobs… your family and friends…”
“We’ll come.” Sidney cut in. “Tash, go pack - only what you need that you can’t get anywhere else. We’ll leave in half an hour.”

And with that, there were three and they were back on the road.

Sidney sat in the passenger seat leaning his back to the car door so he could see both of them as he spoke. “If we get split up we’ll always meet outside the public library of the town we’re in. Failing that, we’ll meet up at the town’s main service station, it’s usually the one named after a Mack or a Tom or something. If we’re in a bigger city, meet back at the car.” Sidney organised.
“Number Two will be what we say if it’s not safe to speak, meet up, or anything. Start all conversations with All Clear if it’s safe.”
“This all sounds like a computer game.” Natasha noted. “We’ll be fine guys, we don’t have to worry anymore.”
