They woke with the sun and the young ones were off and running before most of the older or elders had blinked the sleep from their eyes. They grabbed breakfast as they ran; loping through the tree branches with ease and skill even if they were only a few years old. Nill stepped on Kiliy's hand just before he leap up into a tree and whether it was on purpose or by accident she swiped out and hit him with her claws, Tothis making a slight disapproving noise before he rolled over and covered his eyes with his arm, blocking out the light.
Fruit was gathered and grasses and seeds as well, for healing. This was done by most of the young adults and slightly older - those too old to swing off branches into the river but not old enough to be content sitting in a circle, talking or thinking in silence. Once that was done they all relaxed, the heat becoming too much to do much else. The elders moved to sit beneath the trees but the children still needed to be watched, so the younger adults joined them in the shallow waters except for Tothis who had to sit beside his father, and Kiliy who always joined him.
"Nill, careful!" Anea called, her voice almost bored. Every afternoon she found herself sitting in the cool water with nothing much else to do but sit and wait for something - anything - to happen while she made clothes from cloth or wore tools down into whatever shape was needed with sand and rock.
"You look so sour." a voice interrupted her thoughts and Anea looked up to see Mao who made quite a bit of a splash as she sat down even though they were in maybe three inches of water. Mao was the whitest of their dark family, so white that she was in fact, white. Simply born like that, and they couldn't ask the woman who'd given birth to her any questions as she'd simply slipt away into the shadows and was never seen or heard from again. They didn't talk about it much, and Mao was the happiest member of their family so the elders didn't think it did much harm. Mao was like their good luck charm, she'd saved the little ones countless times and didn't mind at all when they rubbed her arms for luck before one of them or more set off to do something they didn't want to.
"I do?" Anea asked quietly and Mao nodded thoughtfully.
"Then again, you always do though." Mao continued. "What's so bad?"
"...Sick of fruit." Anea mumbled after a while and Mao laughed.
"What? Want meat for once? Oh those humans did no good here, did they?" Mao laughed as if it was funny and then picked up half of Anea's work, setting her hands to it herself. "Zeni-ihnu - get down from there! Safely - back the way you came! You jump and I'll make you jump from higher than you'd ever want! Over and over again!" she turned back to Anea and looked at her for a very long moment.
"What?" Anea finally asked in a mutter and Meo shrugged, a smile still on her lips.
“It’s more than that, isn’t it?” she asked pleasantly and without thinking Anea nodded before she realised what she was doing. “What else?”
“…Kiliy annoys me.”
“Why?”
“She…. I don’t mind it but… I don’t understand why she and Tothis are together. I don’t… I don’t like him, I don’t care - but… it makes me wonder. Why them?”
Meo stopped and looked at Anea once again with her probing dark eyes. She started at Anea for too long, until finally Anea shrugged and looked away.
“Can’t explain-”
“Don’t say it.”
“-Love.”
“Love doesn’t exist.” Anea snapped and with that she got to her feet and ran off, leaving Meo perplexed in the hot, afternoon sun.
