As if they were little children again Vera spent the night over at Jairdan’s family estate, the room she had stayed in as a child (the one next to Jairdan’s) freshly prepared for her while she and Jairdan lay on the floor of his room with the doors locked behind them.
“Everything’s so quiet.” Jairdan murmured, his arm across his eyes to block out the light. “I mean… things aren’t exactly that different and yet…”
“I can feel it too, don’t worry.” Vera assured. “…Do you really feel you can leave this place?” she asked suddenly, catching him by surprise. “Besides your father… You don’t have it that bad…”
“Mother would understand…” Jairdan replied but his voice sounded a little blank. “She’s not even talking to me anyway.” He added bleakly, “I don’t know what-”
There was a shout and he and Vera looked up, hearing numerous people run past his door. They waited for a moment before Jairdan shrugged and lay down again, ignoring it. They were both content, Jairdan’s irritable mood floating away until…
…Suddenly there was the sound of the lock turning and the door was flung open, it was a flustered looking maid, one who served the meals normally, she shouldn’t have any reason to be up on this floor at all. Before Jairdan could demand how she had a key and why they had been interrupted the maid informed them all first, quickly and without a bow.
“There’s a situation, master and mistress. I’m afraid mistress Ingarda will have to be leaving.”
“It’s after dinner!” Jairdan exclaimed, jumping up to his feet. “That is really unnecessary. What has happened?”
“I have been told to not inform young Master.” The maid kept her eyes to the ground and this time she bowed shortly. “It is really of key importance that mistress Ingarda takes her leave now…”
“Jairdan…” Vera rested a hand on Jairdan’s shoulder to halt his advance on the maid. “It’s okay. I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
The maid led Vera out, leaving Jairdan alone and then with sudden dread hitting his stomach as he remembered where the direction of the running was heading hours before…
He ran out of his room and to the end of the floor then up the stairs finding…
