002. Tears? - February/March - Rambles & Snippets - Fiction[NET]

Amelia ran as fast as she could, her dress tearing around her knees as pointy branches snagged it. She pressed on, caring not for the fine dress it had once been, it was frilly and disgusting and she had always hated it anyway but she did think in the back of her mind that she wished she’d been a little more careful… she had only made it worse for herself. Running away from her lessons was one thing, making a total mess of herself in a place where she could be seen by the public was another.

She didn’t want to care about that anymore. She was sick of it! She went to the brain numbing lessons and smiled and curtsied to the ugly slobbery boys her parents made her meet and she still hacked it all, (she loved that word, hacked, her parents hated it as it sounded so coarse…) and then at the end of the day they wouldn’t even reward her by letting her just BE. She had a few hours of free time but they tutted when she didn’t spend her free time going over her lessons! Why would she even want to? She had just spent all damn day playing the violin and writing out her formulas and the answers, her hand cramping from concentrating so hard to make her script neat, she was only ten years old for crying out loud, she didn’t need all that stress in her young life!

She eventually sat herself on a ditch, and rubbed her legs roughly, pleased as the white fabric was turned the red of the dirt, and then contemplated it for a moment as tears pricked her eyes. She was going to get into so much trouble…

“Hey now, are those tears?” a warm voice like honey interrupted her and fear shot cold through Amelia’s stomach. For someone to see her in such a state… if her parents found out…
“Don’t look so scared! I won’t harm ya.” He didn’t pronounce his words right and his fingers were bright with rings, his hair was long and his clothes… they were so torn…
“You’re a Sky Pirate…” Amelia breathed in wonder, her tears halted immediately.
The Pirate grinned but his eyes were cautious. “Now how could a young thing like you know that?”
“I know what to look for.” Amelia replied confidently. “That is so awesome!”
The Pirate relaxed, sure that he wouldn’t be ratted out to the feds now. “Are your parents the same now?”
Amelia’s face turned dark and she turned away, shaking her head. “No.” she replied, her voice low. “They the upper-class type. They own the Ship Port yet they ban me from going there…”
“Well then. I know that type well.” The Sky Pirate winked at her. “And normally I wouldn’t lead someone to disobey a parent… but to let a girl cry is another thing entirely.” He smiled at her and held out his hand. “Want to see my ship?”
