On your more serious points:
I was not entirely serious when I said that it is the natural desire of the tourist. I agree with you that people are not out to destroy the things they are there to visit. I just meant that millions of visitors a year can do some damage to a place simply due to sheer numbers of people touching things, but I was trying to say it in a concise and funny way, because with an entry that could be all about death and sadness, I wanted to keep things that weren't my main points short and kinda silly.
Re: anglo-centric-ness, that wasn't my intention, but I can see how it comes off that way. I think my reaction to both the drawing and the writing was, "wow, this is so different from what I am used to, it seems silly to me!" Which is a play on our cultural believes and is anglo-centric, maybe in a different way than you were thinking. One of the questions I've been asking myself on a pretty much daily ( ... )
