i haven't spent a lot of time there (most of the times i've been were for the rowing championships in sacramento- not exactly a vacation, nor a hip destination), but i did enjoy both san diego and san fancisco, though they have very different feelings to them. i've been to disneyland, and i'd agree with kristen (my name is kristin! hehe) that it's far too expensive and overrated, unless you are really into disney. i enjoyed it, but then i was 10 when i went.
there's vineyards all over, napa and sonoma valleys being the most famous, obviously. there is supposed to be a fabulous wine train that you can ride through the countryside while dining sumptuously and drinking local wines. of course it's pricey, but worth every penny, according to my friend who went on it. depends on your level of skin-flintyness, i suppose. i probably am too cheap ( ... )

Big Sur is a must. As is San Fran.
I lived in Monterey, which is a nice little town, about two hours from san fran... if you do visit monterey, you can pretty much visit all the surrounding towns of Carmel and Pacific Grove and Cannery Row.
But I cannot stress enough that Big Sur is absolutely breathtaking and a must-visit-before-you-die place...
Stay the fuck out of LA. it sucks, indeed...
give me a call if you want...i'm not in cali right now, i'm in florida, but i can tell you to visit Micah. hahaha.

Although it really depends. If you want to do really beachy things all the time, SD is the place to do it. San Francisco is sort of California's token east-coast style city. You can get around on public transit, and it's all cute and little and has lots of awesome stuff to do. (And the record stores up there are AMAZING.)
Also, if you came to SD you could pop down to Mexico for a day or two.
