1. Does anyone know someone that is either a court reporter or a closed-captioner? These are two new ideas I've got for what the hell to do with my life. It's a lot of schooling and a lot of money, but the field seems to be wide open. And you can work from home. Hm ( Read more... )

My Aunt is (or was) a Court Reporter. It's a good job, but technology seems to be taking over for a lot of it. (i.e. they record the trial, and you type transcripts). You don't use a stenograph (or whatever they are called) nearly as often, etc. Did you have any specific questions? (I may or may not know the answer)

I'd actually even be interested in writing up the transcripts as opposed to the stenography part. I don't really have anything specific to ask, just...does/did she like it? Did she think it was too tedious? You know how some jobs seems like they'd suck, but then it turns out they aren't that bad? Or maybe it is that bad lol. I'm not really sure.

Stenography is a whole new language you have to learn. I remember being little when she was studing for her classes.

She seemed to really like it. They moved to Arizona (from Oregon) because she was in higher demand there. That's a big part of it - location. But, if you are fully an at-home type then I'm sure there is stuff that can be worked out. She is super detailed and orginized, so it fits her. I think it would a be a fun job, because you would get to read/hear/type about so many differenet things. Real life is a crack up sometimes. GL.
