If you want to read this entry, you'll have to look at my new blog.

And really, you should all be getting something other than LiveJournal. It doesn't even have freaking RSS feeds.

http://aciel.livejournal.com/data/atom -- I use this as a feed. Plugs right into my favorites folder in Firefox.

How does it handle not being logged in (or being logged in, for that matter)?

I just made my last entry "Private" -- the live bookmark thingy in Firefox lets me know that there is an entry there, but when I click on it, LJ says that I have to log-in to look at it. Same thing with "Friends only".

I like that LJ is so crappy. It suggests that I am just here to keep in touch with people and dick around. If I had anything nicer, people could get confused and think I want to be an Actual Serious Blogger or something.

also, you can create a community to update from a feed.

In addition to the atom feed mentioned above, your rss is http://aciel.livejournal.com/data/rss is your rss feed. Been there for a long time. In 2005, they added podcast support. In fact, I remember back when I used livejournal as my rss reader (that's what syndicated accounts all are). Lots of things crappy about livejournal, but feed support is not one of them.

In fact, livejournal founder brad invented the idea of an atom update stream that has since been widely adopted by other services and ported to things like jabber, where instead of pinging, you subscribe and it just continuously dumps data on you. See invention and current implementation. It may not seem like a big deal now, but in 2005, this was huge ( ... )

I don't actually know what an RSS feed is.
Does that make me technologically defective?

Yes.

An RSS feed is basically a way you can get just the data from someone's blog and stream it through something like Google Reader so it lets you know when people update instead of you having to go refresh the page.
