I have yet to use macros in the game. Mainly because I have no idea how to write them or what I'd use them for except for a one button press for casting all the 1 hour buffs my justicar/druid/shaman mix has. I have very few active skills at my level that aren't just slight alternatives on the same cooldown, so far nearly all of my points add passive bonuses (not that I'm complaining about that).
I've now also got all of my other soul options. I finished the last one at level 20, but I could have got them all a lot sooner if I'd been actively rift chasing instead of doing quests and looking for mining nodes. :D I really like the mix and match aspect of them, though it's not quite as open as it first appears. You can put any combination of souls together, but some combinations have a high degree of skill duplication or add passive buffs on things the other souls don't provide and so are wasted. It's still enough to create many different roles though and I like the fact I can have one build for solo play, one for group healing, and yet

I'm afraid macros don't work like that at all. They're not meant to reduce the number of actions you the player has to perform (i.e. buttons to press). They're for increasing efficiency in ability use and button presses by collapsing several into one button and the macro will run the first ability that can be legally performed in the list that you define. Given the sheer number of abilities you pick up, it saves on a lot of hotbars

Ahh, I see. I guess that would still be somewhat useful for putting all my 1 hour buffs in to a single button press. I like to keep a clean UI, it's less confusing and distracting that way.
I've finally started to find iron in the latter half of Stonefield (mid 20s onwards). It's not in vast amounts, but I can collect it at funny hours of the night when the server is less populated and I have less competition. Have to say I got a bit of a shock when I logged on today, forgetting it was the weekend, and the main city was heaving. Luckily I had some crafting I needed to do so I mostly managed to ignore everyone else (yeah, I play an MMO to be anti-social apparently) XD
It'd only work for the buffs if they have different local cooldowns, otherwise it'll just keep casting the first one in the list when you press the button. IIRC there's a few buffs that have their own seperate long local cooldown so you can always put those together in order of longest cooldown first.
I'm fairly antisocial when it comes to interacting with random plebs. I dont like random grouping unless it's for somethign specific and there's a good chance that teammates will be somewhat competent. I much prefer to play with friends and guild, with my own solo time as well.
As mentioned before, as far as MMOs are concerned (And I have tried out quite a few, though not nearly as many as you) Rift is definitely in my Top 3, just below Anarchy Online and EVE Online. Though EVE is a bit of an odd entry, as it is just the concept, story and feel of the game that I love. Playing it however, was not my cup of tea in the end.
But ahem.. this is about Rift, not Eve!
Reading through this made me want to fiddle around a bit more on my cleric and rogue.
