Sanford and Son

Dad and I had a series of emails back n' forth this past week. Now that I'm on the lookout for a civilian-side tech job, he and I have had plenty to talk about professionally. What follows is possibly the best conversation the two of us have had in years.
A touching tale of technological tones... )

*g* reminds me of conversations with my dad, only with more emphasis on the spiritual side of things, and better typing. Civil Engineers don't have to know how to touch-type. *l*

So did you end up with a humanities degree too?

Also, sorry I haven't called yet, I'm still busy trying to figure everything out, especially since I will be going up with my dad. We'll be staying at a hotel in DC. Maybe we can meet up and grab a bite to eat one evening? Anyway, I'll call and see if we can work something out.

Sounds perfect, no worries or rush on the phone call. If I happen to miss your call, don't think I'm blowing you off--keep trying me til I hear it, b/c I can be rather deaf when it comes to a phone ringing at times.

Yessir, I wound up with a degree in political science. I am a PSU certified professional bullshitter. I do NOT want to wind up a talking head on CNN, nor do I want to lie to the people on a daily basis regarding what I'm going to do and how I'm going to do it. From what I understand, those are basically the options you have if you pursue political science to its end. I don't want to be a lawyer, but that's the only forum my love for debate would really flourish in.

So...computers. :D

You should talk to my buddy Jesus over at Microsoft. He's a dev, so I guess he's one of those coders who stays up late on projects, but he likes it. He gets time off, sees his family in CT a couple times a year, makes his own hours, etc. It's not quite what you're into, but maybe he can give you some leads.

He's also a Scot and a drunkard, as Mike will attest to, but he's a great guy.

WATCH me. It's Microsoft. Bill Gates is too busy watching his billions of dollars to pay attention to who's in the office.
