Snails

My snails are a lot of work.

First of all, the HR girls gave me a bunch more from their fish tank - in fact, they gave me all the snails from their fish tank. Those girls know I am soft hearted and won't let any snails get flushed down the garbage disposal, which is what they said they would do if I didn't take them. But that means that my snail ( Read more... )

I don't know what to do! I now have a small bowl filled with babies that remained in there when I cleaned the big tank. I hoped they'd die during the night, but they're all alive, tiny dot-sized snails. AND the ones in the main tank laid another 400 eggs overnight. I now have a spatula with which I plan to scrape off these eggs.

However, I really hoped for something a little less high maintenance.

I'm thinking you should never have human children. ;-)

Seriously though, I guess I never thought of snails as "high maintenance." Although I've got a pretty big tank with a ton of aeration, and only had a few snails at a time. So that's probably the difference. You must have some very horny snails. Mine rarely ever bred! Maybe they just didn't like each other.

You probably have African snails, not pond snails.

I have no idea. They're like Apple or Mystery snails, and I just keep a handful of 'em to keep the growth of algae, sludge and grunge out of the tank, that the catfish miss.

I am, by no means, a snail expert. ;-)

Who knew snails were high maintenance?
I only have one, Cthulu, that I inherited from a friend who was moving. Steve freaked when I got him though- said snails were born pregnant & I'd be overrun.
I haven't had any more snails, though.
Do snail eggs look like little white hard bumps? I get those every now & then. Wondered what they were....

My snail eggs are like... gooey, slimy, clear jelly sacs. Filled with eggs! :) SO MANY EGGS!

A friend of mine's taken up doing pysanky, and is looking for craft fairs to peddle her wares at. She doesn't quite do Traditional Russian stuff, but it's exquisite- next time you're gonna be up here drop me a line (or tell your mom to email colubra @ livejournal.com) and I can show you a piece she did for me as a gift.

I thought your mom's involvement in the winter festival might make you a good person to point sanat at, as she's totally looking for audiences for her ability (and the piece she did for me regularly makes me go 'eeeeh oh god it's awesome', whenever I look at it).
