Sanctuary Review The Five Part 3

Mar 07, 2011 00:34

From part 2

Act 4

John calls Tesla the most dangerous of the Five. Well, yes, he is the most powerful when you count how many powers he has and how smart he is. But...he doesn't have a crazy energy critter inside him, making him murder people. He's trying to bias Ash against Tesla, trying to get her to show where Helen is.

Good point! (You always have so many!) He's so into his speech and so hyped up that he totally forgets to be OCD.

#2 Yeees!

#4 I know. Poor Ash... She really got the short end of the stick there.

#5 Yeah, I like that they don't leave it hanging at the end of the ep. It's a testament to Ash and Helen's relationship that they came together again quickly.

Sorry it took so long - I kept feeling there was more I should add, believe it or not! Obsessed? No, just devoted.

Yes, he seems more interested in watching how she handles the whole affair, whereas the others want to butt in. He's just admiring her while they try to "protect" her.

The amazing of Niko kinda does that to my brain too. lol

Thanks for reading! I had a lot of fun doing it.

Lovely review. :)

I have to say though, I never thought he was evil when I watched this ep. I mean, just look at his expression in that cap of him when he's showing Helen how he makes his mini mes. He's so innocently happy, he genuinely thinks he's showing her something cool, that she'll like. And then he explains his cool plan to her, and she shoots him! I'd be pissed off too, if someone reacted like that to my awesome plan that I thought would make them happy.

Thanks!

I have no idea why I believed John. I guess it was 'cause it was only the 7th ep, and I didn't know yet not to disbelieve character narrations - or to at least take them with a grain of salt.

Niko really is like a kid showing off his newest toy or creation. He's totally blown away when Helen thinks he's wrong to pursue his quest for world domination and revival of vamps.

I totes agree - I'd be rather miffed and, frankly, sad, that they didn't like it.

Yeah, I actually recently managed to come up with an explanation for John's behavior in this ep. I mean, he's not insane anymore, and even if he doesn't like Nikola, I think he's rational enough that he wouldn't just jump to the whole 'Helen is in mortal danger' conclusion without reason.

It's a bit like the cat coming in and dropping a dead rat at your feet. "What do you MEAN you don't want to eat it? I killed it just for you! It was a tough fight! And rats are DELICIOUS!"

Crazy Tesla! But when is he not?

Oh yeah, that snake thing...or whatever it was.

LOL I thought Henry had a dress on, but Biggie was just covering him up. xD

No! Don't kill my love! Oh wait...he's fine. xD

So fine...

*ahem*

Ashley/Helen bonding moment...FTW. Oh Ashley, I miss you.

I watched all the Tesla episodes out of order starting with "Sleepers", so when I got to "The Five" somewhere in the middle of the process and found him doing his crazy-eyed speech about taking over the world with vampires I was appalled. It was like WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY NIKOLA?! Except it clearly was Nikola, just being really REALLY disturbing instead of just mildly and intriguingly disturbing. I'm glad he got over that phase. (Sort of.)

Still love this ep though. Like you, I believe at least 85% of everything Nikola said to Helen was true, and I don't believe he ever seriously meant to kill her. And when he pushes her out of the way just before the shockwave hits -- oh yes. Egomaniac or not, he'd take a lot more than a bullet (or several) for Helen Magnus.

Jumping from Sleepers to the Five would indeed be a bit of a shock. You really need Revelations and End of Nights to make the transition properly. When I first watched the Five, I found him really disturbing too. Cool, but disturbing. I was sad to see him "killed"; I felt they'd wasted a character. Thank goodness they didn't!

The bond between them is very strong, and every scene between them makes that clear. I love how complex their relationship is, though! And I love how Niko finds unconventional ways to show his admiration and respect for and his devotion to Helen.

It's very cleverly balanced, because Nikola could be pathetic or even annoying with the way he makes his interest in Helen so plain, only to be shot down or ignored by her repeatedly. Except that J-Yo makes it impossible to see Nikola as helpless or pitiable, and AT does a wonderful job of showing that Helen is constantly torn between exasperation, fondness and genuine attraction where Nikola is concerned. It's just a great dynamic.

Very true; they could have gone either direction easily. It's a testament to Damian and Martin that they chose to take the path less traveled. Casting Jon was another stroke of genius, given how me makes every character he plays so unique and compelling.

I have rarely seen a dynamic like Helen and Niko's in any setting - books, tv, real life - that their chemistry never ceases to intrigue me. Like you said, Helen always seems torn between wanting to bang her head against a wall and wanting to grin at Niko and maybe give him a hug.
