Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Perkiness and fangirling the Steel Samurai is totally an ability. Also bottomless pit of a stomach.
Spirit channeling: Maya's able to call the spirit of a deceased person into her body, essentially channeling them. Her body shifts to match the body of the dead person - that is, several of her physical characteristics change to match theirs. Her physique changes to match the spirit she’s channeling. She grows taller/shorter (although she’s pretty small already sooo) and her body adopts the general shape of the spirit. Her face changes as well, but her hair stays mostly the same.
Her Core-given power would be to induce a hallucination in the other person. More specifically, a hallucination - that they’re having an encounter with the closest person to them that died.
It would basically function like a strong illusion -lasting anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes, but the “encounter” (whether it’s happy/sad/etc) would be left completely up to the other mun. The entire thing would feel real to the character - but it would pretty much take place all in their head. So, during that time - the character would essentially be… physically still and unmoving - lost to the real world- while the “meeting” played out in their head. Like a very vivid dream - but the kind of dream you don’t realize is one.
With mun permission, Maya would be able to get a glimpse of the dead person’s face.
This ability would only work on people who’ve had someone close to them die. So for example, if someone had no one important to them die - it wouldn’t work at all. Even if people they know have died, the person they hallucinate seeing has to have had an emotional impact on them when they died, or it won’t work.
However, if their loved one came back to life and/or died in the Port, it would also count. So that loved one could be alive again because of the Core - but regardless, there’d still be a vision of them.
This ability would only fly with permission from the other mun, and it would be initiated by touch. It could also work defensively (IE: If Maya ever needed to run away, there’s a distraction) and has some plot potential… Such as giving someone closure/traumatizing them or even… someone getting fixated with the idea of being able to see their loved one again and such.

Normal,
channelling Mia) She's unable to control her body during this time, and has no recollection of whatever goes on while the spirit is in her. The duration seems to depend on her spiritual power, and since she recently did a lot of training, she’s able to channel for several hours. However, as soon as the channeling ends - Maya is left feeling weak and faint. After the last long channeling (Dahlia Hawthorne), she collapsed almost right after the spirit left her body.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: In a world where murder court cases are mostly settled by dramatic pointing and table slamming…. One spirit medium. Will eat burgers.
Maya Fey was born in the small, secluded, and spiritual Kurain Village. Being of the Fey bloodline - she was born with the potential to have spiritual powers. Namely, being able to call the spirits of the deceased into their own body (her own appearance shifting to match the person being channelled, as well)
Having that said, Maya Fey was born the second child to Misty Fey, the Master of the Kurain village.
Details of her childhood aren’t known too much, but what is known is that her father died when she was young - and that she grew up particularly close to her older sister Mia.
There was a specific court case that occurred when Maya was young - one with inconclusive evidence. A spirit medium was called to channel the victim - Misty Fey. She channelled the victim, and the victim pointed to one man. However, said man was declared innocent, news of Misty Fey's mistake leaked to the press and she was publicly shamed and disgraced.
She left her family to go into hiding, and Maya was left solely in the care of the elder daughter, Mia, and Mia took care of Maya for years after that. At some point, Mia left the village to pursue a career in law - and find out more about the circumstances of that case. By the point Mia had left, Maya had become quite independent, so she was fine living on her own (and the sisters kept in constant contact)
On a casual visit to her sister's law office, she discovered her sister's dead body, and was then framed for her murder. And who should come to her aide but her sister's junior assistant, Phoenix Wright?
She was reluctant to put her life in his hands at first, even if he was the only one on her side. But when no one else would take her case, she conceded. Within a day he had turned the trial around - with him on trial for murder, and her off the hook. He won, and the real murderer was found guilty - and then Maya became his assistant. She was a spirit medium, so often in times of need she would call upon her sister's spirit to help Phoenix. They went through cases together over the years, her acting as his sidekick (and calling Mia to help him when things got tough)
However, there was also another matter - with her mother missing and older sister dead, she was next in line to become Master of the Kurain Village. And that made her a target to her aunt, Morgan Fey. Morgan Fey originally lined up to be the master, but due to her weak spiritual power, Misty Fey took the spot instead. Morgan later gave birth to a prodigy child - Pearl. Pearl was Morgan's pride and joy, and she plotted to have Maya killed so that Pearl to take her place as Master of the Kurain Village.
However, the plot failed, thanks once again to the help of Phoenix Wright. Morgan was sent to jail. Pearl became something like a little sister to Maya, tagging along with her and Phoenix. (And channelling Maya when Pearl couldn't.)
Later, in one particularly intense murder case, Maya was kidnapped and held as hostage. The ransom? A "not guilty" verdict for one Matt Engarde, Phoenix's client. The kidnapper? An assassin Matt Engarde had hired. The battle was long and intense; with Maya channelling Mia and asking her for help, being starved, and Phoenix fighting to buy time while the authorities frantically looked for Maya. In the end, Phoenix showed the assassin evidence of Matt Engarde's betrayal, and he got the guilty verdict he so richly deserved.
Maya was sent free, and continued to be Phoenix's sidekick. However, between that and her increasing duties as she was integrated into the role of "Master" of the Kurain Village - she found herself more swamped and with less time as months went by. But that became the least of her worries. Though imprisoned, Morgan Fey was still desperate to see Pearl as Master - and hatched another plan to kill Maya, this time involving Pearl herself, and the channelling of a certain someone.
Pearl herself was oblivious to Morgan's intent and happily went along with the plan, believing herself to be doing it for the good of Maya and the good of the Fey family and Kurain Village. However, Maya once again escaped death - being protected by her older sister's lover. And, in the end, as usual, Phoenix saved the day. Pearl was extremely distraught, however, upon finding out what she had done, and was reluctant to face Maya. Maya sought her out - found her, and comforted her, putting on a brave face for her, despite how much she herself was suffering. She managed to cheer Pearl up, and there was a celebration and a generally happy ending, hooray. And then she was taken!
Point in Canon: Right after the end of Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations. (3-5)
Character Personality: Maya Fey is the original (and obligatory!) perky, quirky, teenage girl sidekick of Phoenix Wright. Usually found eating ridiculous amounts of food for someone so tiny, fangirling children’s TV shows, tagging along with Phoenix as a sidekick of sorts, going in headfirst, getting into mischief and touching strange objects without hesitation.
A first glimpse at the chipper girl gives you an impression of childish excitement and naivety. She’s upbeat, friendly, with a sense of wonder and excitement that you’d usually attribute to a child. When tagging along with Phoenix outside of court, she’ll spend more time getting into mischief and poking at weird objects (or just taking things without permission, tsk tsk) than much else, sometimes landing Phoenix in trouble. On the flip side, however, she’s usually the one talking to the prosecutors and witnesses, nudging them for information.
She's something of an oddball. Her trains of thought tend to end up in very… interesting places. Having been raised in a secluded environment like Kurain, (and she naturally has an overactive imagination and weird thought processes) Maya is naive and not very technologically savvy - but she isn't stupid by any means. She has common moments of perceptiveness - the only thing is that her train of thought is easily derailed. And when derailed, it usually ends up somewhere farfetched.
In court, she plays a supportive role to Phoenix - but that’s also where a good deal of her perceptiveness comes into play. She’ll often pinpoint and comment on things even Phoenix misses, and keeps him on track and the nudges him in the right direction or gives him the basis for theories that end up being his stance in court.
Although Maya may seem like a naïve child most of the time, she’s capable of great maturity of and strength - that shows consistently through all of the games. As the current Master of Kurain (and even before), Maya takes her responsibilities to Kurain very seriously, and her role as a spirit medium even just in Phoenix’s cases. Aside from that, she consistently puts other people before her own needs - smiling for Phoenix’s sake after her sister died - smiling for Pearl’s sake after her mother died - and even reminding Phoenix to fight for justice when her life was on the line, even if it meant her death. No matter how bad she feels, she will always smile for the sake of other people. She’s a very caring person underneath her quirky exterior, and often notices things others don’t.
A lot of Maya’s personality is also defined by her relationships with other people - because she clings to them and cares for them with everything she has. Being primarily raised by her older sister (and her aunt, but that’s barely touched upon), Maya came to idolize, adore, depend on, and look up to Mia. Even after Mia’s death, Maya still seeks her advice in tough situations.
But since Mia passed, her most important person became Phoenix Wright. He defended her when no one else would, promised her he wouldn’t abandon her when the rest of the world had turned its back on her - fought for her, and saved her. For that, she will always love him with all her heart, even though this love manifests itself by teasing him, draining of him of all his money, dragging him on wild goose chases, and acting like his little sister. Despite all of that, she tries to take care of him in her own way - will always be there for him, and would die for him if necessary.
Another important relationship would be her cousin, who she takes an older sister role to, perhaps similarly to the way Mia raised her. Aside from Phoenix, Pearl is the person dearest to Maya, and through her caring for and raising (since her aunt was imprisoned) Pearl is another way that shows Maya’s more mature side - as Maya does her best to take care of her cousin and always puts her happiness before her own.
It isn’t particularly hard to intimidate her and she’s somewhat of a wimp - but where it counts, Maya won’t back down. She’s tenacious and very dedicated to the people she loves and often has spurts of courage in desperate situations (Ie: Jumping between Phoenix Wright and a 20,000 volt taser.)
Although Maya’s self-esteem has improved since her sister passed away, it’s still quite bad. She is very harsh on herself and will beat herself up, sometimes to a ridiculous degree, if she feels she’s failed someone. She holds herself to very high expectations (Ie: Going as far as to wish she was dead when she failed to stop an armed man twice her size from overpowering Phoenix and stealing his evidence), and won’t accept any excuses for herself. She hates feeling like a burden more than anything else, and will get very down on herself if she feels she’s being one.
Character Plans: Phoenix’s sidekick, of course! Maya’s fairly social so she’ll probably acquaint herself with people and get up to her usual mischief.
