As readers of this blog know, I am an avid reader, but I will stop reading a book if it turns me off. One of my shut-the-book-in-the-middle-of-a-sentence triggers is gratuitous violence. And lately, that has been happening more and more with children’s books.

Last weekend I saw a fabulous production of Romeo and Juliet at the Yale Repertory Theatre. If you can get tickets to see it, do.

I read the play for the first time in 7th grade. It was. . .tedious. Sure there were portions that enchanted me, but I mostly remember my English teacher emphasizing how Juliet wanted to get married before being with ( Read more... )

Today I got to see a showcase of seven short animated films, including the five nominated for this year's Academy Awards. To my surprise and great pleasure, among the nominees is "The Lost Thing" directed by Andrew Ruhemann and Shaun Tan, based on Tan's picture book by the same name.
