Oh subtitles.

I'm curious about watching "Lust, Caution", but since they have no subtitles ('It's a Taiwanese movie showing in Taiwan, why would we need English subtitles?') I have a feeling that I'd spend much of the movie being completely screwed over by my lack of understanding.

Also my director says I'm not allowed to watch it because I'm not married. B-but ( Read more... )

Yeah, that movie sounds far too complicated to follow without langauge. But on the other hand, you could enjoy "some" parts of it without the words at all! And following that line of thought, I think you've just hit upon the perfect genre to enjoy with your professional colleagues. ;)

And no, don't give up. If people can go back to grad school 10 or even 20 years after graduating, you can surely find some combination of past teachers or current employers to rubber-stamp you. Or, maybe there's a career path that doesn't require the masters...?

I just read the summary in the local English newspaper. I know it's supposed to be a good movie, but without the language I'll be missing out on a lot.

I need two academic references, but I don't even speak to anyone from university. It sounds like a little thing, but if I can't get them then what am I going to do when I go home? I don't want to teach, but my parents will force me to.

a) Can't you just call or e-mail an old professor and START a convo? Their contact information must be up somewhere. I'm sure they've been through this before
b) You're an adult woman now. If it gets to that level, your parents can't force you to do shit anymore.

a) I did that, but none of them have replied.

b) They can when it's obvious that I'm broke and unable to survive on my own.

well you could always do somthing academic thats not a masters, and gathe rup some references via that, but then again that would take alot of time and money *_*. Don't give up, try salvaging those references if you can.

Research assistant sounds interesting to me, actually, but I don't know how to get started.

It's not like the director can stop me, but she said I shouldn't anyway.
