haven't you been told to keep your shiny things out of the reach of cats

[Hogwarts' latest outsider has found herself with some free time! And how is she going to use it? Studying, perhaps? Working on adjusting to the new culture and surroundings she's suddenly found herself in? Learning her way around the school? Doing anything even remotely productive?

No, she's going to tear the tinsel lining the hallway as a ( Read more... )

[Ken has spent the holiday season thus far immersed in studying: to get by in this world (and to catch up in his lessons) he needs to learn everything he can about magic and the history of the Wizarding world - to say nothing of locating the culprits behind the earlier suit-of-armor "pranks".

So his first thought as he comes across Nepeta and the tinsel is actually: Oh. It's the holidays.

He feels a pang, since he's not home with his family - he left without even saying goodbye.

And then the rest of the scene sinks in.]

Ah...um.

Ah...I'd imagine...

[Her world is just similar enough for the differences to be uncanny. But from her appearance, she doesn't seem to be a Digimon, or from Link's world...there are probably more worlds than any of them could imagine.]

But a peaceful world is to be wished for, right? You have time to relax, and understand things slowly.

It can be hard, when there's so much you might never have imagined, when nothing fits in your comfortable model of a world. But surely, others will help you out. And bit by bit, your own "world" will grow.

It's not a bad thing. Just a whole lot to take in at once!

[Looking absolutely fascinated, Nepeta stares as Ken goes on. Admittedly, it's a little much for her, but it's kind of comforting in its own way-just the idea that there are going to be people helping each other here is incredible on its own!] I guess I'll understand soon.

...You sound pawfully sure of yourself! Is this something you know from expurrience, purrchance?

Ah....yeah.

[Ken's cheeks color a little, but he smiles at the memory.]

I didn't - really understand anything, growing up. Even though it was my own home...I drew the wrong conclusions, every time. But others reached out to me, and showed me things I wouldn't have noticed on my own.

[Even if they'd been before his eyes all along. But he'll keep that part to himself.]

Surely, it'll be the same for you.

Aww, heeheehee, that's so sweet! [She loves stories with happy endings! And this sounds like the happiest kind of ending. Things were never like this back at home!

She sighs dreamily and fidgets with her tinsel a little.] So people are really that nice to each other here, huh?

[Ken almost blushes, then looks down slightly.]

I'm not saying you shouldn't be careful. But you don't have to work through your confusion alone.

[Hesitantly, he reaches for the tinsel.]

Anyway, let's decorate this hallway again...

It's so nice that people do that for each other! Even though I guess not efurrybody can be so furiendly...

Aww, no more playing? [She makes a pouty face and holds onto the tinsel. But playtiiiiimeeee!]

That's certainly true.

[This is awkward and he knows it. But she'll only get in trouble, or become an easy target to those looking for trouble, if she keeps playing with tinsel in the halls.]

We can - find something you're supposed to play with, instead.

[He gives the tinsel a light tug.]

[Ooooh, more playthings!] Okay, but only if you purromise! [And so begins the process of unwinding herself from the tinsel.]

[...and now he has to find something in the castle for her to play with, when he barely knows anyone & is too young for Hogsmeade trips.]

...yes. I - promise.

[Now think, Ken. Think.]

[Brilliant job there. After much spinning and writhing around she has gotten the tinsel off of herself and helped pin it back up to the wall, and then comes the expectant staring. Playthings were purrom-promised!

Cats aren't that hard to amuse, at least?]

[No, Captain Obvious. Three weeks from today.]

Of course! It's still playtime, after all.

[Cats are not particularly patient creatures, Ken.]

Well...then....

[He rummages in his pockets, looking for something to offer in exchange for the tinsel.]

The school store should have something good. It's the right time of year....

You think so? [Oh gosh does this sound exciting! She crouches a little like she's ready to spring forward at something.] Then what are we waiting for? Let's go!

Ah, then....

[He'll start leading her towards the store, hoping they'll have something good.

Presumably said store, too, has its halls rather decked.]
