Can someone please tell me how Twilight is at all different from virtually every vampire story of the last 30 years?

These vampires are *sparkly*! Or something.
Also, apparently sunlight doesn't kill them dead, or perhaps it waits an appropriate interval before making with the deadening. Not sure, haven't read the books.

they're pale-faced and more beautiful than any other human being. (sounds cheesy, I know)
Their skin is sparkling when they get into sunlight (that's why the vampire family lives in a rainy village) so *sparkly* is a good word I guess ;D They can be killed by tearing their body into pieces and burning them afterwards.

I've heard from quite a few people how much they enjoyed reading the series.... but all the hype just kinda turned me off. I think I would rather re-read my Anne Rice books instead >_>

I'd read the first two books and then I made the mistake of walking into a Hot Topic and seeing the marketing first hand. It (stupidly) made me rather upset. Yes, I would have enjoyed them more without the hype.
