I need to take a break from SGA. I cannot stomach it right now. First there was Trio, aka sexual harassment is funny and will even get you the girl. Then there was last week's Midway, an episode that made me want to throw up with the level of racist stupidity displayed. TPTB are making it really hard to enjoy my show right now. And then the fandom goes and
discusses gender issues and I just want to either
cry or hurt people.
Honestly, what the shit is this:
I think you are being too generous with the Cadman character: personally I found her totally obnoxious in 'Duet' and I am not about to forget her nearly killing both McKay and herself by preventing him to think to find a solution to their life-or-death situation: instead of letting him concentrate and think, she was actually screaming hysterically and nagging him in his brain! [to echo Rodney: be a good little girlie and shut up]
I am sick of reading about how much SGA hates women [thank you, we will stop harshing your squee now]
Regarding Cadman, Heightmeyer and Weir, I've never liked them because they highlight all that is worst in women
Personally, I've always felt that Teyla represented the worst in steriotypes. She's the warrior woman who wears revealing clothes and acts all fiesty except when she doesn't. [I, uh... what?]
This is completely ridiculous. And I don't even mean that you were apparently watching Stargate: Atlantis, which was set up as mostly a boys' club from the beginning, expecting strong female characters.
SGA isn't about woman power and feminism. Deal with it. [this is where I lose my shit]
More often than not, it's the John-and-Rodney Show with Ronon the laconic warrior and Teyla the scantily clad warrior princess. It's stereotypical. It's thoughtless. Even brainless, sometimes (think Lucius Luvin); the kind of entertainment where you can settle back on your couch and stuff yourself with potato chips or ice cream or whatever and just let the plot drift by while watching the pretty on the screen. [I'm sorry if I want to enjoy my entertainment without it actively pissing in my ice cream]
Yes, there are some very strong female characters, but I think that's because the writers are more about the characters than their gender (at least most of the time), race or whatever.
For myself, I haven't really seen any massive gender issues in the show itself. [...] Yes, SGA is mainly about two men.
Also, wouldn't the sexual harassment be reversed from women, since it seemed like Keller and Carter were harassing him more than the other way around? [re Trio: oh tell me the poster is kidding]
It would be nice if one day we could live in a world where such stereotypes don't exist anymore and the smart/poor/female/brown/dumb/gay/whatever people aren't the butt of the joke. This isn't that world. SGA isn't that show.
SGA is a tv show. It reflects reality as it is, good parts and bad parts. No one is watching SGA expecting to be enlightened and graciously led to see The Truth.
Bottom line to the show-bashers out there...if you don't like the show then don't watch it [I apologise for harshing your squee]
I'm not saying that there aren't things that are wrong with SGA, because we all know there are. I'm just saying that maybe you're expecting too much, and this kind of blindly striking out won't help the matter. [I apologise for harshing your squee]
As I said, if you don't like SGA and the main characters, then you've made the right decision to stop watching. Perhaps you should avoid fandom too and all of us "penis worshipers".
I honestly think that if someone is watching SGA solely for the women, they're watching the wrong show and have been since the beginning. [I apologise for interrogating the text from the wrong perspective]
Stop watching if you hate it that much and stop harshing other people's squee with your constant nagging. [I apologise for harshing your squee]
The annoying thing about your post is the link at the beginning. In my book that's a big No-No, not nice at all. [I apologise for my goddamn fucking tone]
