Are there any good energy drinks (some caffeine is okay) that aren't habit forming? I like drinking tea, but it usually isn't strong enough to keep me awake when I have to stay up a long time to study or work. I've weaned myself off soda a long time ago (the actual content of soda is bad for my health), and I can't afford 2 or 3 Starbucks drinks a ( Read more... )

I find grapefruit juice more effective than any caffienated beverage. It seems to clear out the cobwebs.

Most of that stuff on ThinkGeek is sold out. I've had my eye on the caffeine molecule mug for a long time, and now they're out of stock :'(

Well, I know that most herbal teas and whatnot tend to be associated with relaxing one, but I find Jasmine tea (naturally low in caffeine, oddly enough) does a pretty good job of perking me up.

My preferred brand is (Traditional) China Green Jasmine Tea, and it comes in packets of twenty five bags. Imported from China, it's available in most health food shops.

I am not being paid to endorse this product, but just in case any reps from rival tea importers happen to be reading this - yeah, it could happen - you'll find my e-mail address on my blog. *Open to offers*.

Green tea isn't that low in caffeine. There's herbal, which means caffeine free (and in fact not actually tea), and then there's green tea, which has a sort of medium amount of caffeine.. less than black tea and coffee. The good news about green tea is that it is reported to be rich in antioxidants.

yerba mate (pron. hierrba maaahtay) popartagenda October 29 2005, 12:10:19 UTC
I encountered this in Buenos Aires. It is an ancient medicinal drink of the Guarani Indians, I believe. You put it in this little small bulb shaped cup called a calabash, into which you pour hot water. then sip it through a curved metal straw called a bombilla, which acts as a strainer, keeping large pieces out. and allowing you go sip the "brewed" mate.

its the most incredible energy drink. also i've heard that it cleanses toxins, and has various other health benefits.

is definetly an acquired taste, but give it a try. i'm sure you can find it at your local health food store or online. the grad students I spent a great deal of time with when visiting often took their mate around with them from home to library. it has no caffeine, but really helps you clear your mind and focus.Good luck!

Yeah,
I was going to suggest this.
It contains a stimulant similar to caffeine but probably wont cause the diurretic effects of cups and cups of coffee (headaches and the like).
The taste is fresh, and by that I mean a bit leafy. I love it, but agree that it's probably aquired.

Does that mean like grass clippings?

Yes, I drink yerba maté on occasion.

I usually just drink lots and lots of water (if you constantly need to use the bathroom, it's harder to fall asleep - normally) and burn this candle from Illuminations. I've found that caffeine doesn't really keep me awake any more, or if it does, it makes me sick.
My preferred energy drink is Snapple Rain.
