about consonant clusters-
were these formerly referred to as blends?
also does this idea count for all consonants in a row? so the 'nt' in went or just at the start of words like 'sm' small?
someone asked me and i have no clue whatsoever.
help!

Need to be careful here-consonants that are "in a row" in the way a word is written aren't necessarily part of the same syllable.
A syllable has three parts: a nucleus (which is usually the syllable's vowel), and onset (the stuff before the nucleus), and a coda (the stuff after the nucleus). A consonant cluster is when you get more than one consonant in an onset or coda.
