Why do a lot of professors "bribe?" or pass out candy to students during class?

I've noticed a strange trend with a lot of professors, and I'm not too sure why this is happening so perhaps you can comment on a) whether you've done this in the classes you teach and b) if you can provide some kind of explanation as to the reason ( Read more... )

I think it has less to do with Ratemyprofessor and more to do with departmental end of year course evaluations.

Food helps stimulate the brain?

Or perhaps it is just trying to get students to like *class* not just *their* class, but school in general.

It's the Brave New World approach to death.

Throughout my undergrad, I probably ate food in 10-20% of all my classes. I found it made me happier and more attentive. But that's me.

yes. this.

I often provide candy or other treats during three-and-a-half hour final exams. that's just a long time, and most of them don't think to bring anything to snack on halfway through. I figure a little bit of sugar won't hurt.

I've never had it mentioned on any evaluation. Students do say thank you. Some of them don't take any. Some do.

The only time this has ever happened in one of my classes is during the course review session at the end, and I don't think it was a bribe at all. AFAIK, my professors never looked at RMP, and my cohort sure doesn't tend to rate them.

I bring candy for halloween every year, just because *I* like sharing candy. Ulterior motives? Sure, we all have them at times, but dude, just go with it.

Ditto. I also like eating in class, but find that students think it rude if their professor only brings enough candy for one.
