Tags, Please?

Jul 08, 2007 16:14

I confess up front that I usually fail to tag on the rare occasions when I post to this community.  While searching fruitlessly for the past 40 minutes for a specific post, I am in the majority.

The tags are useful not only for people who are searching for a specific post,  as I am, but also for people who care to take the time to find out if posts ( Read more... )

Okay, okay. I'll go back and edit mine. What's the protocol for proposing new tags? For example, for my "Brian May" post, "non-traditional students" or possibly "non-traditional career paths" come to mind as tags that might have more general applicability.

I'm not sure what the protocol is for new tags. Maybe the mods can help us out, here?

I don't think that we have a specific protocol, but you could just send one of us an email. I have no issue adding new tags.

"What's the protocol for proposing new tags?"

You suggest one, the mods get pissed off for not thinking of it first, then they say they've created it, and direct people to a non-existent page.

It's just one of the reasons why AA is so highly respected in the real world.

I could also use advice on how to tag an entry that was "general scholarly networking," like this one, which doesn't fit any of the existing academic-field-related categories very well.

Maybe we can make some links for the various fields that are represented in this community....

Or maybe we are allowed to make new tags whenever none of the existing ones apply.

Not sure.

Can that one go under the tag "recommendations" for now, maybe?

Okay. I'm finding that my posts tend to be hard to categorize - either I'm a bit too outside-the-box or I do a good job of not replicating earlier post topics. ;)

I agree that people ought to use tags, but, for reference, the mods turned on search indexing for this comm a while back, so if you're looking for a particular post that might be a better bet.

search indexing? What's that?

It means that you can use LJ's search feature to search for specific words and phrases. You can use the search here:

Or click on the magnifying glass in the community profile.

In my experience, tags are wonderful for topical browsing, but rather poor for finding a particular post.

If you email the maintainers, I suspect that we'd be willing to add new tags that are appropriate (at least I would be).
