I would start by looking at successful proposals written by people in your program, especially those by students who work with your advisor(s).

Excellent advice. If you've never written one before, having a chance to look at the structure and format of a successful proposal will be helpful.

check out your dept. website/ask around because most schools/dept have some specific requirements that need to be in there; talk to these profs about what they want to see in there (since they have ultimate approving authority); and then... well, it depends what kind of diss you're going to be writing. For starters check out Marshall & Rossman's Desiging Qualitative Research (I used 3rd ed.). Depending on your specific type of antthro, there are probably some books specifically on your methodology which need to be covered/could be helpful. I think there's an anthro community somewhere around here which might be helpful place to ask, too.

The community is anthropologist but I've found it's mostly undergrads. Still, couldn't hurt to ask.
