Knowledge from the Most Unlikely Places

Thanks to the Smart Bitches, today I learned all about Haka and the All Blacks rugby team.

A little poking around on the interwebz netted me this cool video:

That is sooo cool.  I think I've just discovered the REAL roots of crunk dancing!  Watch some of those moves turn up in "Stomp the Yard II - Maori Boogaloo."

Who says you can't learn cool shit ( Read more... )

i'm currently reading "lucifer's hammer" and i'm having a very hard time getting into it...it's ok, but i normally don't read sci-fi. so far, i give it 3 out of 5 stars.

I'm not familiar with that book. I'll have to look it up on Amazon.

I'm not traditionally one to read a lot of sci-fi..but lately I've been getting a high dose of urban fantasy which I kinda like...so long as it's not tooo unbelievable.

But then again, I can suspend disbelief for just about anything. That's a perk from being Pisces!

Okay!?

Yeah, there are lots of things to be learned between the "quivering" body parts and other things "twitching" in anticipation.
LMAO!

My friend is in NZ for study abroad an just blogged about the crazy rugby fans...one of their teams apparently just lost a big game an they're all embarrassed.

I have learned so much from romance novels! European history and American history from the historicals, but also just the vocabulary makes it worth it. It's not always the best vocabulary, like how many people could tell you what a concubine is? But still the adjectives and nouns that may have had cultural or historical significance are great.

I swear to god, romance novels are what made me do so well on the SAT reading comprehension and writing.

You are so right about the increased vocabulary skills! I think that may be a byproduct of most reading though, so long as it's above 12 grade reading level. I think for a lot of popular fiction that's pushing it though.

And I totally agree about the historical stuff. You can learn tons about different geographic locations and local culture/customs as well. I also love it when the author's sneak in some social or societal message with the fluff.

Good stuff!

GO THE ABs!
LoL, couldn't resist. In my defence, they are the national rugby team. (I don't understand the sport, but I love watching the highlights on the six o'clock news. The skipper's pretty good-looking too)

And currently, I'm slogging through Lydia Joyce's Shadow of the Night. It's gothic historical romance apparently, and I can't say I'm liking it too much. On the other hand, it's put-downable, so I actually study.

Just finished Suzanne Brockmann's Force of Nature.Extreme Danger by Shannon McKenna (Can we say lots of shagging?) and the third book in Jacqueline Carey's Imriel trilogy awaits. I've also (stupidly) purchased Nauti Nights by Lora Leigh (without having read the first book in the trilogy...for some reason, Nauti Night appealed to me more) and the first three of The BulletCatchers Series by Roxanne St. Clair. I'm a bit concerned about The BulletCatchers Series because I have no idea what they're about, but hey, the blurbs and amazon reviews sound good ( ... )

Gothic Historical Romance? Sounds interesting...but maybe not since you said you aren't really into it ( ... )

Ugh, I've decided to give up on Lydia Joyce. She goes in the same category as Stephanie Laurens: No doubt a great author, just not for me.

Yeah, I've read some of the other TS novels! The earlier ones have a different tone to the last three though...they're a bit more "action-based" I guess. A lot of fans of SB don't like her last three novels, mostly because of the slight change in tone, but for some reason, those have appealed to me more. Maybe because I enjoy the pithy one liners? Hm...

Will do. Now that they're on their way, I'm excited about getting the BC novels again.

OMG. If Julian reminds you of Rhage, Kyrian, who's Julian's best friend and the hero of Night Pleasures (which is after FL) will really remind you of Rhage. He's like Rhage, if Rhage was a former General in times of yore. Incidentally, Kyrian is one of my favourite SK heroes. Funny that.

Oh goodness!

Kyrian is like Rhage too!?

::thud::

I fear that Rhage has ruined me for most romance novel heroes. He IS the standard as far as I'm concerned, especially with the paranormal stuff. That said, I do like Frank's Nightwalkers and Feehans's Ghostwalkers. Those guys are pretty awesome too.
