This was a terrible idea in a long line of terrible ideas, although Max often liked to think all her ideas were good if not downright ingenious. But that could also be the blinding efforts of denial and pride. At the docks, however, she was damn well aware that a part of her wanted to know what in the hell she thought she was doing.

Falling into a trap, she thought to herself unhappily. It just had that trap-y feeling ( ... )

Even without stealth, she surprised him, and he whipped around at her voice, before breaking into a genuine grin. "No, it's--" More than enough, really. His eyes angled to the side, suddenly self-conscious. This wouldn't do at all. He was to be the escort, was he not? And now he was shy from his own joy? How purely human of him.

His lips twisted in discomfort, then he peered up at her--first cautiously, and then slipping into something more mischievous. "For water, to be certain," he gave in light teasing. "But we've had a date before."

All wrapped up in ribbons and bows, blood and trauma, he was sure. Still, it was a pleasant memory, despite the ending of the game. It was something to remember. Something to consider, when one noted the details she had noticed, even under another's influence. She was startlingly bright, perhaps to a dangerous degree, but he liked her. She saw more than most, saw him, to be certain, and he liked her. Yes. That was all.

And what was this? That very brief vulnerability in his expression, if one could even consider it that, which she'd not seen in him before. He was usually too busy teasing her, embarrassing her, but for only a small moment she saw something else there.

He composed himself too quickly for her to comment on it, and in turn brought up something she'd been trying to dismiss from her own memory. Max pursed her lips at the reminder of that lapse into depravity and hatred and turned pointedly towards the gentle lapping of water against the docks. She was beginning to think he'd had some awful dates wherever he'd come from.

"What were you planning on doing here, anyway?" she asked, trying to redirect the topic. "If you swim in there you might sprout another appendage." She smiled at him, skeptic of the water's quality. "And I doubt it'd be pretty."

The flit of emotion through her, the chance of uncomfortability at the thought of that memory made him smile, though he said nothing more. For now, at least. He would play the perfect child for a little longer.

Albedo grinned up at her, blinking bright eyes. "Well, now, if you like, I could try that. I'm pretty sure my regeneration will cancel any radiation, but I suppose there's always a chance...." Not really. He had the utmost faith in that solitary aspect of himself. That abominable curse; that enviable trait. He shrugged his arms up to link them behind his head, glancing over the scenery idly. "I really just wanted to see it," he admitted, with no obfuscation in the words. "I didn't think much past that."
